Removing bonded windows

Featured Replies

I have a car with a broken OSR quater window, it is bonded in place like a windscreen with a rubber surround,

Its only a small window and was thinking i would have a bash at doing it myself as i can get a window from scrappers for next to nothing,

Just wondered if anybody had done it before, watched screen fitter at work before and they make it look easy

I was thinking of changing my rear side windows (estate) for ones with the aerial printed on them but gave up for three reasons:

The new price was a lot for what I got;

The local scrap yards never seem to have Octavias in let alone ones with the right windows;

And

I couldn't find any decent info anywhere on what to use or how to go about it.

Conclusion: I'll paint the aerials on my existing windows.

Sorry that doesn't help you but if you discover anything if be interested to read it.

We've got a screen fitting company on site at work. They cut bonded glass out using a length of serrated wire between two handles, then chisel the remaining bonding from the frame, prime the frame and glass, run a continuous bead of sealer/adhesive around the frame and stick the glass to it. You'll need to take into account any interior trim that may need removing. So to DIY it, you'll need to invest in some tools and materials, it may pay to get a 'fit only' price from a small local windscreen fitting company.

Glass held in the old fashioned way using a rubber seal is easier, you only need some cord and soap to fit those.
