Just sold my Yeti - already missing it

After two and a half years happy and proud Yeti ownership my time with my little 1.2 with deep regret has come to an end.

I've finally had to bite the bullet and get something bigger. I've gone for a used XC90 an altogether different beast.

Positives - Placed order and bought without test driving pre hype. One of the first 1.2 dsgs - exceeded expectations! Great fun to drive, plenty of get up and go, So quiet, a joy to own, drive.... great spec - mine was fully loaded, No squeaks or rattles, reliable, low depreciation ( based on price paid in 2010 ). That sunroof.... lets loads of light in and opens!!! Interiror doesn't feel cheap and finally i've been left with great, very positive memories.

Negatives - Build Delays. Claimed economy - never more than mid to high twenties mpg in everyday use, alloy wheel and badge white worm, leaky sunroof sometimes. DSG sometimes hesitant. Park Assist never trusted it again after it kerbed rear NS alloy. Farce over ordering spare and sunroof options together.

Room for improvement- Small boot with spare in place. After 1st year,,,, began to have nagging doubts over DSG reliability... weird rumbles when pulling away from standstill never failed though. No KM markings on speedo, rear seat backs only cloth material easily damaged / how safe - should have a metal plate. 12 speaker sound system??? not worth the extra. New Yetis seem to be pricier - Can't get the same spec for around the price I paid new in 2010. Front seat bases seem to ripple. Expensive front indicator bulb changes... why is something so simple so complicated not simply clever.

I'd like to wish all who contribute, those who just visit, support this site, and all you Skoda / Yeti owners out there all the very best... to those undecided about the Yeti... I say go buy one... you'll never regret buying one....it becomes part of the family letting go is very hard though...

If only there were a Grand Yeti..... I'd be at the front of the queue..... Are you listening Skoda??????

There is already a cashcow +2 so it's a market they are missing out on.

Possibly it will use the longer wheelbase planned for China, but too early to say really.

Thats interesting. Id read it was for the Chinese market only so that potentially could be a great option for us!

Yes. I was thinking of getting the 1.2 instead of a diesel as i do quite a fewhort trips but mid to high twenties seems incredibly low. I thought most people were getting mid to high thirties at least

Very short journey? Heavy right foot?

I can get 20-30mpg easily from my diesel DSG in heavy congested traffic, or short trips up steep hills ........ It is that which drags my average down to 37.7mpg.

I am getting 41.2 MPG on a brim full basis (so accurate!). I have measured from new and at 6,900 miles the MPG is gradually improving as mileage increases. Motoring is a mix of A roads, some urban and some Motorway driving. I am not a speed hound but certainly not a slow driver. The one type of driving that drives MPG to 37-38 is 75-80 MPH motorway driving INTO a head wind, which I guess, is related to aerodynamics - or lack of!

I guess if you have a heavy right foot and are a thrusting type then you can drive MPG down to mid 30's - but I think you would have to really try hard to do that.

Incidentally my 1.2 Tsi has the DSG auto box.

I'm glad others are getting better fuel economy... these were just my observations after 2.5 years and around 10000 miles.

- What I meant by this was even allowing for Inflation and VAT increase. The deals don't seem to be there anymore. Guess Skoda dealers know how great the Yeti is, the product sells itself, so not willing to discount.... great for low depreciation.... great trade in. I bought my fully loaded (every option) Yeti for a great price in 2010. Same car is now at least 15% more.

Don't think I or the wife has a particular heavy right foot.... so not sure why so low.... ... although 80% of journeys in heavy stop start traffic,school, shopping runs.... Even the optimistic trip computer would suggest 28-29mpg at best - other cars i've had in the past seem to achieve near claimed combined figures but never better....so maybe it was just my Yeti, early model? fault? or weight of options, kids etc, and getting the thing moving everytime we stop in traffic..

Hope the big Yeti, grand Yeti, Yeti +2 or Snowman, whatever it ends up being called has extra boot/ seven seats.

What options is yours carrying? Are you travelling on your own or fully loaded?

Notice yours is also running on 16" wheels. Would the Tyre / Wheel combination affect mpg ? Mine was running on 17" Dunlops.

How old is your 1.2? Maybe they've improved the software, and consumption?

My reasons for going for the 1.2 were the very short journeys most less that 5 miles, and fear of DPF problems with the Diesels, although never heard of any Yeti's having DPF issues.

2012 Yeti made in February - Lava Blue1.2 Tsi Elegance with Gobi sand leather interior, 16" Moons, Park Assist, Spare Wheel, Tyre Pressure Monitor and Electric Drivers seat. Great to drive and no problems whatsoever, just fitted Nokian winter tyres on Skoda steel wheels with Rif trims. Generally me plus wife for everyday journeys, rarely have more than 2 passengers and when on holiday normally just 2 of us plus a LOT of luggage (I am not going to argue that we "might need" wellies and a sou'wester in the middle of summer!!)

I doubt the 16" wheels make any difference to MPG, probably more related to type of driving. I guess if you are doing a lot of short journeys (1-2 miles from cold) then you will use more fuel whether it's petrol or diesel, but modern diesels do not do well on short journeys clogged DPF's and clogged gas recirculation valves for a start.
