Columbus FW/Maps Upgrade Help Me!

Featured Replies

Right I am sorry to be asking this but I thought I would throw my problems out there in case anyone has any good advice which might help me. A few of you have been helping me already and I really appreciate it guys thanks.

I have a 2011 C version LED Columbus and it was on V8 maps and FW 2764

First: I tried to update to V9 7920 and did as instructions online say it started fine got the on screen prompts selected to save it to HDD not run from DVD etc then it started on its merry way. After 50 min ish the status bar got to the end then just went back to start, this was a cycle that just continued over and over again let it run through 3 times then reset all and tried again. When I put the DVD back in the next times it didnt do the on screen prompts it just went straight to the install to HDD (pressed eject to see status bar again), same thing keeps filling then starting again 50 min each time.

I then tried this morning after charging my battery overnight as it totally killed car in end (not used in 2-3 weeks) to update Firmware to 4020 to see if that would help........ This was a nightmare I downloaded 3 copies of it (FW all legal not maps) burnt with img burn to a DVD and CD each one at lowest speed (2X my drive) every one gets to APPL update stage hits 14% then get the SWL failure message and that is the case with all ones I tried on all media I used (good quality CD/DVD's). I used the josi recovery disc on CD and it worked to get me back in to the radio when I checked the hidden menu it showed I was on version 4020 (but it never got past 42% overall in update so I think that bit was done to change that screen and its wrong. I then try FW3970 used downgrade mode and it went straight on with CD. I then read more online and discovered this does not create the partition for POI's and it removed my ability to get into hidden setup menu so I tried to now upgrade to 4020 didnt work. I used josi recovery and the hidden menu is back woohoo downgrade mode now putting on FW3810 as it is meant to partition the HDD etc.

When I had it on FW3970 and I put the V9 7920 DVD in it didnt go through the in screen prompts nor did it start to automatically copy them over as it did after first few runs, it seemed to just use it as the source for maps full stop.

I have spent 3 days online looking at all manor of sites and forums I have 23 tabs open on my browser still and I am no further along.

Does anyone know where I am going wrong or of a better source that has worked on my version of Columbus (0xC801) 3T0035680A which is a C variant with LED screen. Big one at moment regardless of which FW I end up with how to I get it to take the maps DVD and go through the process as per the first time where I get the on screen prompts??

As I said I have been around so many sites inc a few good threads on here and I am not looking for messages posted on here with sources for maps as they seem to be frowned upon under Briskoda rules. Firmware being a different matter any confirmed as working links would be much appreciated.

If anyone has made it to the end of this post I apologise for its length etc but this was done on my mobile in car. Anyone who has upgraded before will understand how many house I have spent in vain so far fannying around with no end in site. 4 or 5 hours on Thursday night, on and off throught the day in work Friday and since 0730 this morning until right now and its still ongoing lol. :(

I take it the disc is a copy?

I had a unit no matter how many map discs you tried it would get to about 60% and restart

put a genuine map disc in and installed first time

Yea it is not an original. :( Dealers is last chance option Columbus wasn't factory fit and its not free here to get maps updated either way :(

well thats 3814 its says installed and working fine am happy to leave it on that FW but its the having no maps on a Columbus now thats the bug works with DVD in reading maps from it on the fly but not the way I want it left :(

It read the maps ok on the RNS I had a problem with, just wouldn't fully install it

as I said Genuine map installs first time

where are you located?

South Netherlands.

I had the same issue when I first tried to install the V9 maps in my car. It kept restarting at varying percentages and would never complete fully no matter how long I left it. Every now and then it would spit out the disk with read errors. I ended up buying a different make of DVD and re-burned it using the free IMGBurn program. It worked first time then. The one that worked was a Maxell DVD+R Dual Layer DVD.

I have the version 9 maps and my install went the same as described by fubar. The status bar got all the way to the end and went back to the start it done this around 3 times, once it got to the end again it finished installing and I was now running v9 maps. I will be installing v9 maps to my brothers vrs tomorrow. His as newer FW than mine so I will see how it goes both are factory fit units

I had that with mine when I tried to install V9 in my unit running 2764 firmware. It took about 3 attempts to install the maps. In the end I tried from scratch using the firmware install technique of unlocking car, putting disc in without key in ignition and leaving it to it. It decided to install in the end. You say you have a version C but you say itis a 3T0035680A which is a version A revision. I have heard that firmware is not compatible with earlier versions.

According to another thread on here 1Z0 035 680 A is revision A and 3T0035680A is revision C with LED screen. But its a 2011 produced one I didn't think they would have been making A ones that recent? The Delivery Part No displayed on unit in hidden menu can change with different FW its now saying 3T0035680B for example but its still a revision A in reality as per the HW No etc.

From here

The way the firmware work are (they are in order of release ignore the no's as a higher no. doesn't necessarily mean a newer firmware)

1004 - Original Firmware

1024

0904 - From here down is A & B Revisions

1104

1164

1204

2664 - Beta Firmware and only B revisions from here

2684

2704

2724

2764

2804

1304 - Same as 2804 but does not support Voice Control

2844

3804 - From here down B & C Revision only - All support for A dropped

3814

3874

3904

3974

3984

4004 - From here down C & D revisions only

4024

Few points to note:

1Z0 035 680 A is original A revision

3Z0 035 680 A is B revision equivalent

3T0 035 680 is C revision equivalent

3T0 035 680 A is C revsion LED Screen equivalent.

Skoda don't have an equivalent D Revision yet that i am aware of.

Now there are firmwares out there that have been modified to support older devices. For example the is a modified 2764 for A Revisions. However they will be quite buggy when running. Some have no issues and others have loads. I have recently downgraded 3 different peoples units due to running modified firmware creating lag etc with the screen.

VCDS Lite should be able to tell you what part no. you have. Always take what VCDS says as, for example, if you upgraded a 1Z0 unit with 0904 firmware or higher it would change the part no. to 3Z0 in the test menu. However within VCDS it would still show as a 1Z0.

HTH

If you have any other questions give me a shout. I'm not on here much these days as i'm busy with work but i will pop back in every now and then to answer any questions

Regards

Carl :)

on fw2764 the hd is split in two parts map+poi and music, fw4020 needs 3 parts map, poi, muisc. 4020 can't split the hd into the 3 parts you hav to use fw3800 this with format the hd and split in in 3 parts (also wiping maps and music) then update to 4020 or 4120 thats better. after fw update put the map dvd in, it will run from dvd and load to hd without asking at the same time. you may need to recode with vcds to get maxy dot/mfd and or mfsw if fitted

Two people I know have gone from early versions of FW (one was 1xxx and one was 2xxx) straight to 4xxx FW without any issues. Both now have three partitions and also have v.9 maps.

I know it says that it is not supposed to work, but in my experience, it seems to.

I was starting to think along those lines and that's why I decided after installing FW3970 to roll it back to FW3810 was thinking more on the maps side as I was going for 7920 (with the speed cams) that perhaps these were being put on at end of installation as POI's and that I knew FW3970 didn't make a POI partition but for that instance it didn't sort it bahhhhh. I used the josi recovery cd a few times but ended up on 3810 happily.

Yea reading about the entire internet I came across the same stuff people updating from old FW, some same as mine to 4020 no dramas which really peeved me off. lol

Cheers for the replies guys I am now sorted out on FW. Maps DVD must be a dud as I said when trying to rip the image off the DVD it worked fine until just before the end where I got read errors at normal read speed and it failed. When I put read speed to min it still had some retries and eventually captured it and verified.

In accordance with the rules I shall not discuss fully the rest of my experience but upon obtaining another disc of V9 it went on first time no dramas. :)

Again my thanks to you all inc to those who have been helping me via PM.

Glad you got it sorted in the end. The Columbus can be very fussy when it comes to reading discs for updates.
