Potential turbo failure

Featured Replies

Hello people

Kinda new to the site bought my fabia in may this year from a forum member and think its just failed last night on 82k miles. Not really a expert on vag engines or diesels for that matter but there's no boost strange noises and grinding noise when rev'd but absolutely no smoke and ticks over fine as I would expect. Had a look at the intercooler pipe and there seems to be a bit of an oil leek under the car?

Where do i get a replacement turbo if need be? Car is mapped I'm told by previous owner.

Thanks people

Sounds fubar to me, where are you located?

Now may be a good opportunity to go hybrid if you planned to chase more power.

Or a garret pd150 can be picked up new cheaper than a 130 from turbo centre uk and they will take your kkk in part ex too :)

@JoshH. Won't fitting a PD150 turbo require a remap to get it to work? Or will it just get to work and stay at 130hpV

It will work just fine, the very slight lag it may produce will not be noticeable but it goes the option for more power in future an I it works out cheaper I can't really see a downside :)

Oh and the car is mapped according to the op so it will be fine. My mate did the exact thing an got the new 150 turbo for around £550 I think

Located in lanark Scotland mate. Yeah sounds fubar but can't get it into the garage until tomorrow and it happened Saturday night. Didn't plan to chase more power if I'm honest so might just get a recon kkk or go for a new garret from turbo dynamics. I'll check out turbo centre thanks. Do turbos just fail sometimes or is there always a cause?

Cheers.

I would check it's not a seal gone first. Bit silly blowing loads of cash on a new turbo if it can be fixed. Also does fitting a larger turbo make much difference to the power? I would have though a remap would be better value?

Confirmed as turbo failure. Shaft in the turbo has play or something. Ordered one from turbo dynamics today at £520!! Plus labour mot tax n 2 tyres this month plus Xmas!! Jesus welcome to the world of diesel from coming from twingo 133 and clio 182!! Lol.

Do you just drain the car of oil and flush through or take the sump off and wash it etc or replace it completely. Garage is doing the work just curious

Thanks

It depends how deep your wallet is and how efficient the garage is.

Idealy it would be sump off, oil pickup removed and cleaned, strainer all flushed, engine flush put through before oil is removed.

Intercooler removed and flushed out, all boost pipes removed and cleaned including airbox and airpipes removed and cleaned with a new airfilter. New oil filter to be fitted with the best oil you can get. Oil feed to the turbo needs to be removed, cleaned/flushed and filles with fresh oil before refitting to aid in building oil preasure to the turbo before starting

Jesus that's a fair wack. Do I really need all that done or is there "must do" bits?

It depends how far gone the turbo is for me. If the engines fired up on its own oil then the intercooler and pipes need to be removed. If the turbo has failed and parts have came off, this also needs to happen. IF you have caught the problem early and the turbo has simply failed because its old and the parts have worn then i would just clean some of the easy pipes around the turbo, check the oil feed to the turbo is clear and change the oil and filter.

imo the minimum that should be done when fitting a new turbo is oil & oil filter change & checking the oil feed to the turbo is working correctly and not blocked.

if in cases of a low mileage turbo failure or a new turbo has been fitted and failed quickly you would then go fault finding and do the original post i said and clean, check, replace or flush everything needed.

Im no expert though, havnt changed many turbos in my time but that is what i've learned anyway.

Got showed the old turbo that's knackered today. No missing parts etc just gave up. The shaft inside has so much in and out play left and right etc. not used any oil as its been checked. Oil was changed with genuine oil only a month ago still need changed just because of the turbo failure?

I wouldn't check the oil feed, I'd replace every time for the sake of what £30? It'd be worth doing for peace of mind!

Never replaced one tbh mate, never even crossed my mind to... Guess it would be worth doing depending on price...

You say £30, ever bought one new or just pick a figure? Cheers.

Thats up to you again really. How much is an oil filter and a few liters of oil £30?

How much is a new turbo, £600?

Its all just precaution at the end of the day... Could unbolt old turbo and fit the new one no problem.

Best to eliminate a few posible reasons for turbo failure along the way for a few extra quid.

When i had my timing chain changed i changed the oil and filter at the same time all to make a note in the service book saying it had been changed and getting it stamped.

Was just checking :p

Mmm i'd probly just clean mine through and put a few drops of oil in, aslong as it drips through i'd asume it to be clean and fresh!

Ps did you buy the 312 & 256mm brakes i posted up a week or so ago? Got them yet?

Person preference isn't it :)

Yeah got them matey currently going insane hammerite spraying them lol it's my least favourite thing in the world to do :p

I've been meaning to do mine since i got them, even came with a new tin of paint! I ended up putting the small paint brush in the copper grease to use on brakes and cba to clean/replace!

Dont want to get wrong for cluttering so good luck fitting, post results and picks or pm me with any problems since i just fitted mine recently.

Well turbo is fitted. £140 to fit which is brilliant i thought from a garage! I have a problem Now the clutch is slipping like mad! What's caused this? He said the turbo might have been that bad before it went that it wasn't making the clutch slip. In 8k miles ownership the clutch hasn't slipped once.

Yeah not a bad price as they arnt the easiest turbo to get to anyway, Whats included for that £140 though? unbolt old turbo, put new one on and away it goes? (not making you worry, if they hadnt have done there job you would know by now!)

Sounds like you've had a top result anyway, sorry to hear about the clutch now! might as well change the clutch & flywheel then thats pretty much all the big bills your going to get on a diesel! haha
