HELP! Odd Noise from Front

Featured Replies

Hi Guys... I wonder if anyone can help!!

I was on my way into work and at one point I started noticing a slight squeaking noise... I thought it may have been my fans as I had them on full blast, so I turned them off but it was still there??

As I got closer and closer to work this squeaking got more common... especially when turning left slightly.

The noise seems to be coming from the front right and it sounds as though the Wheel Arch liner was sitting on top of the tyre... but I've had a look and it didn't seem to be touching the tyre anywhere.

I'm not running bigger alloys or a lower suspension set-up than standard, so I'm completely stumped... And now it sounds horrendous at low speeds!

Anyone got any ideas what it could be???

Cheers

Alternator belt sqeaking?

Would that squeak at the same speed as the turning of the wheels even when the clutch is depressed??

It would sqeak pretty much all the time, even when your stopped.

If its sqeaking when your moving id be looking at low brake pads or possibly wheel bearing.

Alot of brake pads have a metal clip on them that push against the brake disc when they get low to warn you they need changing soon.

Jack the car, spin the wheel and see if you can hear it.

Ok ... Cheers Fella.

Yeah the car only squeaks when moving... I would hope the pads are ok as I did a disc and pad change about 2 months ago.

I'll see if I can get the car jacked up at lunch time but my mate at a local garage said I can pop it in to him later for them to have a look if I want.

just taken the car out a got it up on the jack. Looks as though either the calliper piston is siezing on or there is something stuck between the pads and disc. Can hear it scraping as i rotated the wheel.

I find that reversing usually flicks out whatever is stuck in there - unless its really jammed in

could be the metal shield behind the disc catching, quite common.

You said you changed the discs and pads recently, did you use plenty of copper grease while fitting the new pads?

Did you pull the sliders out, clean them up and re-grease them.

Did you clean the calipers up well before fitting them?

Did you remove and clean the small metal plates that go inside the caliper for the pads to sit in and side on?

Hiya Mate,

Thanks for the advice... I didn't check the shield to be honest but I noticed when I jacked the car up that the wheel wasn't spinning freely, so I assumed that the brakes were binding.

I did give the calipers a good clean and I greased up the sliders. The one thing we didnt do was remove and clean the metal plates inside the caliper. I was running out of time so skipped them because they didn't look too bad... Probably a big mistake!!

We did notice when doing the brakes that the pistons on the caliper were really difficult to push back so I'm wondering if if the caliper is on its way out?

It's in the garage today so hopefully they will get it sorted!

Cheers again!
