Remap advice needed

Featured Replies

I've read that remapping can potentially shorten the lifespan of the engine. If this is correct, can anyone advise on what sort of mileage we're talking about?

My 02 Octy VRs has covered 68000 miles and i'm seriously considering remapping, (i'd like a bit more power at the lower revs to start with - especailly 1st and 2nd gears), but I'm looking at keeping the car for quite a long time.

Is it worth me doing? (Jabbasport or some company called red i tuning has been recommended to me).

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Many people here have had no real problems with remaps. As for 1st gear i would forget about that, you just wont get traction, short shift to 2nd and feel the whooooosh. I would also consider JBS custom code. Do a search you will find loads of info.

Thanks for that. Jabba seems to be the main favourite with everyone. I've never heard of red i tuning, their web site is pretty limited also. I like the sound of the whoosh in second gear, sounds like what i'm after!!!!

Yes , remapping the engine for more power *will* put more strain on various components.

Exactly how much this will shorten their life depends on how much extra power you have , how well the car is serviced , and how you drive it.

A certain Black VRS had a fairly catastrophic engine failure at about 130k IIRC , but that was driven very hard including about 10,000 miles on track.

Driven "normally" for most of the time then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The clutch is likely to be the first thing to go.

If you decide to go Jabba, look out for the group buys from here and get a discount :) You will be happy whichever you choose i'm sure.

I've had my car Jabba'd and have no worries about engine life having been significantly compromised......but I do drive it like a granny.

1st thing I'd say is if your car has done 68K then I'd budget for a new clutch too, as thats probably the 1st thing to go..........saying that it may be fine!

...and a cambelt change if it hasn't had it done already.

If the Clutch goes look at fitting a G60 clutch & flywheel, about the same cost as a main dealer replacing the std Octy clutch but you get a much stromger clutch, Jabba did mine after the std clutch on the 4x4 failed.

Oh & Jabba maps, all I can say is   :):):):):):):)

G60 as in Corrado G60????? Wow thats kinda cool :)

Clutch is the weak point on the car, that's for sure. Not heard anything about other bits coming off like drive shafts and so on, although track use will probably help those along ;)

Custom Maps seem very well-received at the moment too :D

Just to clarify...the failure which occurred to said black RS was not due to the remap...MAF failure.

I will add that "driven fairly hard" is a tadge of an understatement & the car had many more mods than just a re-map. I think its a tribute to the strength of the engine that it lasted as long & as Adrian said had the MAF not failed it would probably still be going today !!

The VAG 1.8T engine is one of the strongest engines I know & tuners fitting bigger Turbos etc are taking these to well over 300 bhp on standard internals without many failures.

A remap will give around 220 bhp so still well within what is percieved as safe & will completely transform the car.

If the black one you all keep muutering about was "driven fairly hard", I'd hate to see one that had had the nuts thrashed off it! :D :D :D

Oh and it was mine BTW, 148,000 miles in 2.5 years. 12,000 track miles. remapped at 5k miles. Had various different remaps and various different mods.

Yes the engine went bang, big time - the MAF had degraded not failed, which meant it was getting spurious signals - if it had failed I'd have been OK as it puts it into safe mode.

Ah well, what's 3k between friends?

Oh and just in case it ain't clear - I don't blame the map or the mods, just the poxy MAF :grumpy:

I would hate to see a car you had thrashed the nuts off of if that was only being driven fairly hard !!

Most of the time it was driven with a modicum of restraint and, to be fair, no expense was spared in its maintenance. Stuuf was changed "just in case" as I didn't want anything bad to happen to it when it was being "driven".

fair point, I guess I only saw you on Briskoda days

I had my cambelt changed at 76000 miles and a remap at 76001 miles ;) The car is on it's original clutch, now at 80000 miles no problems what so ever.
