Major Service / 20k Service?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Apologies if I am asking a silly question, but this is my first car so this is all new to me!

I am getting my car Skoda Fabia II 1.4 serviced on Saturday, it has hit 20k and I am unsure whether I should be asking for a full major service or a 20k service? What is the difference?

It has only been serviced twice before and the last time was January 2011, so nearly two years ago...

I am also thinking of taking the Skoda service plan for £359 as I am also getting an MOT - does this include a full major service or will they only provide specific inspections?

Any advice appreciated!

Welcome to the forum.

It is going to depend on what was done at the last 2 services.

Were they just Oil & Filter services?

Have the Brake Drums been off & inspected?

Probably you now need a Brake Fluid Change @ 3 years.

I would talk it over with a Service Manager, maybe not a Service Desk Receptionist.

If the Warranty is about to run out you may be needing some remedial work doing before it does.

Personally i would have it into a non Skoda Dealership 'MOT Station' one month before the 3 years for its test.

Get the Pass at the MOT or not,

(You will get a 13 month MOT)

then get the service & any warranty work done by a Skoda Dealership.

Checked over by the Independent first before the service is done by having the MOT done.

(Check your own Light, Wiper, Tyres etc before going for the MOT.) JMO.

Hi George,

Thanks for the advice. Yes it was just the filters and oil change on the last service. So I will ask them about the brake fluid. What does a mojar service consist of, do you think it is needed at this point?

I have noticed my gears are a little stiff and don't change as smoothly as they used to - I'm not sure how this is remedied?

Really if it is going to be a Major Service (but not including a Cam Belt untill at that mileage.)

You want your Gear Linkage greased or adjusted if required.

Drum Brakes checked, Air Filter possibly, In line fuel filter, Brake Fluid..

General maintenance & checks really for your safety, Suspension & steering brakes etc checked/inspected etc.

so that the car is good for maybe an 'interim/minor service' the following year.

Then a more involved service the next.

Its all down to how the car has been used, garaged or not.

Thats why i suggest talking to the Workshop Manager or Senior Technician and make them aware of what you have had done or not.

You need to trust them, & hopefully they are honest with you and give value.
