front brake squeel

Featured Replies

Hi folks

Ive got close to new front brake pads but under braking, predominantly 15-0mph they give off a high pitched squeel.

is it down to cheap brake pads (i have no idea what brand/make they are)?

if so, any recommendations on replacements?

thanks

Pagid brake parts are excellent, & OEM quality. 25% off at ECP with biskoda discount too.

you put them in yourself? with plenty of copper grease on the back of the pads?

No, they were put on before I bought the car. They looked brand new when I bought it.

Is there anything better than OEM - green stuff maybe or are they just overpriced?

I've used green stuff pads before, & they were ok. I've stuck with Pagid for a few years now on several different cars, & have never had a problem.

If you do the job yourself get some brake cleaner & have a really good clean up of the calipers & carriers. Plenty of copper grease on refitting too.

The thing I did like about green stuff pads was how little brake dust they left on the front wheels. They cause unusual marking on the discs though. not like a standard pad.

Oh yeah, & braking the first few times on cold mornings was a bit hairy until some heat got into the pads.

might be worth checking that all the bolts are tight too.particularly the 3 bolts that hold on the brake dust plates, just nip them up....also check that the springs that secure the pads are seated correctly...

Greenstuff don't last very long though with standard discs, IME... and didn't brake as well as cheaper pads, at least, in my old Volvo...

Probably no need to buy new pads, just make sure there is copper grease on the back of the pads and on the guides where the pads sit in the carrier.

I've got green stuff pads and to be honest they are ****e cold, on my commute I barely use the brakes so in case of emergency they wouldn't be that great. If I do some heavy breaking and the use them they are excellent. Just fitted some Pagid pads on the family car and am very happy with them. As others have said pop the pads out, clean the carriers and calipers (especially where the pads sits) apply some copper grease and they should be fine.

I think im gonna go for some new pagid pads as ive noticed massive amounts of fade when driving 'enthusiastically' which i've never experience before on previous cars or bikes.

thanks for the advice!

Get them from ECP using the forum's discount code.

You just apply the copper grease to where the piston comes into contact with the back of the pad don`t you? Not all over the back of the pad??

Yes, and Coppaslip isn't necessary if you have adhesive-backed pads.

I put copper slip on the edges where the pads sit on the carriers, my mechanic mate told me to always do it, makes sense as this is where the pad actually moves.

Great, except that the squeal is due to resonance between the piston and backplate, or the friction co-efficient between the friction material and the disc. I've seen/heard cases of both.

I always put it on the back plate as well, belt and braces....... Never had brake squeal from doing it this way.
