Anyone Replaced Rear Pads Yet?

Featured Replies

My vRS is making the noise at the back my old one did when they weren't far off needing changing. The noise brakes make when there's surface rust on them after a wash. Had a quick look in the dark and there's still a bit left and imo won't need changing for a while. Just curious if anyone has changed them yet and at what mileage

Ex Demonstrator, then one owner, with under 5000 miles when i bought it,

the dealers service done at 4000 miles/12 months said

"****ATTENTION **** Front & Rear discs grooved and corroded."

'They then offered to 'skim the discs' when pulled up on them,

I fitted new discs and pads since they were bad enough.

There was enough meat on them but i wanted better pads with the new discs.

My rears look practically new on mine, despite me using a set of front pads already

I had the dealer check mine Martyn before the 3,500 mile trip to czech and the ring in sept. I was at 37,000 miles, they said, your pads (front) havn't even registered with wear yet, as we start to "advise" at 70% wear, so you have 10's of thousands of miles left yet..... the rears were "as new"

(on my fiat the fronts were replaced (with discs) at 60,000 miles, and the rears (no discs needed) were replaced at 90,000 miles)

I expect the vRS to be about the same....

I would (If I didn't know you) suggest you are not drivivng it hard enough, and the rears aren't getting used enough, leading to corrosion, but I have followed you on a brisk drive, and you can drive at least as quick as I can ;)

maybe you are not using it every day, and thus you have some corrosion? (or when you do just "commute" using it to stop from slow speeds thus not using the rears (hardly) ) mine gets driven every day, with at least one "heavy" stop, due to the nature of the fast roads in my area.....

weirdly, despite the balance of front to back brake usage, on the ring, it was my rears that over heated NOT the fronts, I suspect this is due to the ESP snatching inside the rear brake on the back to reduce understeer when cornering over enthusiastically! before my next trip to the ring, i will put some fast road pads on the back anyway, with a higher temp rating to reduce this :)

in conclusion! lol.. (I'm rambling today) your rears will not be worn out at all, but could be corroded surfaces, do a few very hard stops from high speed, and you will probably find the noise dissapears ! :)

Im surprised you over heated the rears. They only do a minimal amount of work. mine have not come close to being overheated and the ring is pretty easy on brakes as tracks go.

Id be wary of putting fast road pads on the back because if they dont get up to temperature, which is highly likely, you'll end up with worse brakes. I've always used fast roads on the fronts, and OEM on the back and had good results.

I basically relived what some journo's have written about the vRS on track..... the ESP will snatch the NSR brake if the car is understeering.....

you have much more track experiance than me, and a less understeery car ;) you probably don't suffer as much...... but was deffo the rears, inbetween laps we came out to let the cars cool, and you could smell / feel/ see the overheating rears while the fronts were fine...

BUT I take your point, they may not get up to temp good for the 99% of the time my car isn't on a track!

Idea... I should just learn to corner better, instead of throwing it into corners with reckless abandon knowing the ESP wont let it go wrong! PMSL...... (I had fun though)

edit: I blame Can he was drivign it on the lap it overheated ;) my laps were fine come to think of it!

get some 312mm fronts and 256mm rears. Even on OEM pads that will be an awesome improvement.

I've heard your reviews on the brakes.... I am keeping mine standard until the warrenty runs out later this year, but I have a mental list of mods following that, ARB's ect.... I will be fitting RSR's in march after the winter ;)

Later this year sounds weird, still feels like december lol.

The RSRs are an absolute gem of a tyre. Mallory was absolutely soaked through on Saturday with loads of standing water and they the Federals were still good then.

lol.. I nearly wrote (next year) ;) yes, I've read the reviews, can order them off e-bay for £108 each delivered :) the reviews generally state they are better with water than most track day tyres, so would make a nice road tyre, still safe in the wet, but awsome on a nice hot day :)

Gave them a good workout going up to Aberystwyth via the Elan Valley and back and no noises whatsoever so could just it being standing a lot of the last 2 weeks plus driving into town and back most days never really tests them. Fronts have plenty of bite though and as you've experienced I've also had ESP grab a rear wheel when taking the p a bit cornering.

My bigger problem could be oil usage though. For some reason it's used more in the last 1000 miles than it ever has and I had to top it up 300ml before returning. I'll be keeping an eye on it though and see how it goes. But judging what others have been saying it might not be looking good so may have to change to something else. Obviously I'm thinking worst case scenario but it's best to be prepared for it. I honestly don't know where to go next as I love the car and does 99% of what I want it to. Got one or two ideas but would result in worse mpg but roughly same service costs. At least that can be controlled a bit with my right foot.

I feel for the oil usage people.... I've read its all about how they got the engine to euro 5, and the pistons/rings, if you replace them with an earlier spec,(or as sy has done "aftermarket" ones, apparently it cures the issue.... luckily mine doesn't use a single drop, honestly, think i'm the only one out there with none at all used.... (just for notes, it used 1 litre in the first 10k, and none needed therafter) I boot it when cold, turn it off when hot...... do all the things you shouldn't do...... and have no problems...

the only thing I have out of the ordinary is NGK "8"'s as spark plugs, just because I was on 37k when heading to the ring, on the original sparkers... knew they would be replaced at the 40k service anyway, so decided to do this before the czech trip (and forego the spark change at the 40k service, my garage was happy to do this) I'm now on 44k with no issues...

as for your brakes just by leaving it standing for ONE day in the rain, you will create enogh crap for it to "grind" a bit at the rear, as I thought, a bit of usage and its gone.... just keep burning it regulaly mate ;)

Still thinking of what to get next now. Won't be for a few months as I'll have to save whatever the difference is. Only one that I keep thinking of is the Audi S3. Yes it will cost a little more to insure, twice as much to tax and will use a little more petrol it is a faster car and Garry seems to love his. The mental hurdle would be spending more on an older car despite it being "better". I will be cycling lots more this year so I'll be saving petrol on the days not driving into work. Is there any other cars I could look at? Failing that I could sell up and go for something a lot cheaper instead. Head says this but not sure my petrolhead heart does.

cheap doesn't ness mean crap.... colins supercharged mark I MX5 for example... matches mine in a straight line, and lots of sideways fun... that wasn't expensive ;) no MPG included though! lol...

There was a lot of older cars I debated on getting a few years ago but again there's lots of choice and lots of thinking to do. Whatever I get would probably have to have 5 doors
