Re-sealing 'sealed' doors

Featured Replies

Hot topic at the mo!! Must be all the rain, I 'sealed' my rear door carriers earlier this week with the uber expensive skoda sealant kit, seems I would have been better spending that £45 on hookers. It hasn't worked.

So I think a generous helping of plumbers gold may be in order.

But what I wanna know is should I try and dig out the sealant I've laid down or do I simply smash the plumbers gold on heavily over the top of what's already there??

Ta

I think you're meant to dig out the old sealant but could be completely wrong, just going by memory of what i think i've read on here.

Found this from the guy below :D :

I have successfully solved the leaking rear doors

Drill the rivets out and remove the carrier, scrape the crappy seal off, dry the carrier, drill new holes (I added an extra couple at the bottom) stick on LOADS of sealant and the rivet the carrier back to the door :)

Note: I have added extra rivets to the bottom of the door to keep it SUPER tight.

Get the old sealant off as it will be wet. Try putting a new rivet in the bottom of the panel as well... There's a massive gap between the two existing ones and that is where the waters getting in.

Cheers guys, best look into buying a rivet gun then :)

Also, I couldn't get the door card completely off, it would hinge up but was being held up somehow near the lock button/window seal!

Back to curtains in the back until we get some proper dry weather to sort it all out :)

Post some pics of the curtains please Josh, I need to do the same :)

Mine was the same, it took some real work to get the door card off all together. My mate got a screwdriver up the back and managed to lever it off.

Thats a brilliant idea!

The rea door panel I just "hinged" up as well.......

I used the Skoda OEM loctite brand sealent which I got FOC from the skoda dealers... :giggle: ...........and scraped all the old stuff out.......and then dried everything .............also have a garage to put the car in aswell

If you have no shelter for the car whilst the sealent is drying then you need to use a sealent that can be applied to a wet surface...........they are out there!

Mine had been done before, i dug out all the old sealant and cut away all the "blown" original foam seal and then used plumbers gold, all the doors appear to be dry now.

Car still steams up and it turns out my boot leaks badly

This: http://www.diy.com/n...?skuId=11039381 Is what I used and it seems to have done a bloody good job.

That looks like serious stuff! I think my door wasnt fullydried when I applied the sealant, rain 2 hours later wouldn't have helped either!

You dont need to take the door card off - just wedge it away from the door so that you can seal half way up all round - I used a quality gutter sealant from screwfix and had no probs since.
