Checking pressure of spare tyre ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Despite loving the car, I cannot but feel the way the spare tyre is stored is badly designed.?

To check the tyre pressure on my spare, the wheel has to be almost removed to do this.

Has anyone found a more user friendly solution.?

I've googled for valve extensions, but only found those that extend it by an inch or so.

TIA

Carry a tyre compressor in the car

£15 off flea-bay

No need to check its pressure

True, and as soon as I had posted I found this which would perhaps do the job, certainly two together would. :D

Last time I checked the spare was 3 years and 4 months ago....but I have to use it 2 weeks ago,and hard to believe the pressure was ok,just a bit low

I had to check mine today when i got a nail in the sidewall of one of my snow tyres and had to use it

Not impressed hope it isnt to close that it wont repair altho spare took some right getting out with a boot full of stuff

I'm never that lucky :D I used to have a small compressor, I'll have to go searching now, forgot all about it.

what are you people all havering on about?

press it with your thumb, if it's soft put air in it, if you ever have to use it stop at a garage once fitted to check the pressure, easy :smirk:

You can also get little dust cap pressure guages. They work within a range of 3-4 psi normally, so you have to get one within the right range that you need. But I'd go with the compressor. And the cheap ones work slowwwwwwwwly. I bought a couple of decent ones and a couple of emergency inflate/repair kits for when the wife ditches those horrible runflats on her beemer come the next tire change.

The last thing I want to do in the wind and rain is spend an extra 15 minutes outside waiting for the wheel I've just changed to inflate. :D

But...all gas stations have air compressors, you can do 4 tires in les than 2 min.

And BTW last flat tire I had was in 2006,seriously,last 2 weeks I got a flat because the accident, broke the rim and tire

And pay £0.50 for it every time. And if the tyres are very low, it'll cost you another £0.50 to finish the job. BAH!

50p every time? How often do you have to use your spare like?

Just make sure it has enough air by checking it with your thumb every month or 2, if you ever have to use it it will be fine, you can even not bother with the right inflation unless your driving miles before getting the puncture sorted.

And your getting robbed, 20p at most garages here :p

Im my country checking/inflating tires is free

Since you should check type pressures with the tyres cold anyway, you need a pressure guage and a footpump or electric foot anyway. Comments about relying on (often abused) garage airlines worry me.

It worrys you that people's spare tyre might be a few psi out? How do you sleep at night ;)

Best thing to do is over inflate spare abit say 40psi and then it should be ok and only need to be checked once a year

A good mate of mine used to run a service station; you can't rely on the accuracy of their guages, quite aside from how tyre pressures should be set cold, and if you're setting them hot you could be 20% low.
