Blowing noise

Featured Replies

Hi guys, something else appears to have gone wrong now, but stumped as where to start.

Please excuse the non technical explanation of the symptoms. :D

The car has started to make a blowing noise, sometimes rhythmic.

It *sounds* like a windy day and you have left the window open a little, or you drive through a puddle at speed and the water hits the underside of the car.?

Sometimes it is very loud, so much so I initially heard it over the sound of the radio.

Has anyone else experienced something like this.?

TIA

When does it happen? or is it there all the time? is the car the 1.9tdi in your info?

Bit hard to say really. Not all the time.

It started on Monday, and was so loud I thought something had really broken. Then it went quiet.

Came back from work today (about an hours drive on motorway) and did not hear anything.

Popped into the shops just down the road, when coming back it started again and I was barely at 50mph. Even does it as you almost get to a stop. Intermittent and not at any particular time like when engine is cold, hot etc.

If I get home and try revving the engine, I cannot get it to happen.

Forgot to say I plugged in VCDS Lite and no fault codes showing for the engine.

so it is only when the wheels are turning then? Sounds like it is bearing or cv joint related if so. which would match what you said earlier about it sometimes being rhythmic. or possibly the brakes, sorry if they don't match the description but it's a little hard to say without hearing it. Does it happen in and out of gear, with or without clutch engaged?

I realise how hard it is to diagnose without being here and appreciate the help.

If it was mechanical I'd have thought it would be continuous.? I drove back from work today 50 miles and never heard a thing. Switched the radio off now and again, but still could not hear anything.

Hope to get it on the ramps on the weekend and have a quick look. I thought this morning that it might have been the underbody tray as I changed the oil on New Years Day, but it seems solidly in place.

Let me see if I can get any more symptoms and post back.

If you get it up on the ramps have a good look around the wheel arch liners and inside tyre wall etc.

Good luck finding out what it is. seems an odd one.

Good news, I think.

Have managed to sneak a look this morning with the car parked up on a kerb and the underbody tray has come down on one side. I presume some of the screws have either worked loose or sheared. There were not that many to hold it on in the first place and the to be fair the screws were not in that great a condition either. New set of screws needed and just that, hopefully.

Cheers, Halfords do a self tapper pack with fixings for about 4 quid, as I have discovered one of those has disappeared along with the plastic it was attached to. Also other fixings are also missing, so should be able to put a screw in most places after getting them
