Recommend me a CCTV Camera?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Basically since about 1998 we have had an IR CCTV camera covering our front garden, drive, abit of the road outside our house (where I park my car) and our neighbours drive (because of the positioning of the houses).

It has come in handy quite a few times in those 15 years, however our current setup is not "user Freindly" as it is being recorded to a dvd player that quickly becomes full after about 200 hours of recording.

The Camera's video quality is about 240p so is rather poor, but has excellent night coverage (as it is black and white), this proved to be helpful about 4 years ago when our neighbour had a wheel stolen from their car parked on the road at gone 1am.

Basically we need a CCTV camera that can possibly record over WiFi or via ethernet (if it could be powered by it too, it would be awesome) and it must have good night vision/IR capabilities.

We would rather not purchase a DVR as we have a PC that is running 24/7, I think it would be easier to have that PC record from ethernet/WiFi straight onto a few TB hard drive so we can easily view the files or edit them.

This has all sparked off because last night our neighbours car was stolen, and our DVD player was full so it didnt record! This has worried me considerably as they could have gone for my CitiGo instead of the neighbours 10 year old Merc A-Class!

We have an EyeSpye 24/7 camera, it doesn't look much, just a tiny lens and a couple of antenna, it is quite expensive but quality is good even in the dark, it has two way sound, so you can hear whats going on aswell as speaking back through it and being heard outside.

The set up is simple, plug it into your router, initial set up and IP address stuff, then simply unplug and move it to where you want it, power is required via an adaptor with ample cable.

To view you can use your home network and type in http:// 192.168.0.** whatever it is on and you can view with quick time, java and so on, you can even view your camera live from your mobile phone too.

How does it perform at outdoors night?

I have just been looking at the EyeSpy247EXT+ but there arent many sample scenes actually outside recording at night.

One more question, can you record directly from the wireless video feed?

It is ok at Night, we have it looking at bird feeders, when a rat or a squirrel (not reds) are stealing the bird food myself or the wife go upstairs and shoot them.

You can record onto a pc/mac etc, it can be set to motion detect so as only recording when something happens.

Give the guy a ring off the website, he was very helpful when we were looking for a camera.

If you get an IP based one you'll publish to the internet protect it somehow. Plenty people go looking for them specifically.
