help with diagnosing engine problem :(

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

while driving home tonight i went to accelerate and there was a pop, then nothing.

It stuttered all the way home with plumes of black smoke coming out the back and no power, opened the bonnet and there was a bit of oil, but not too much, on the back of the engine and turbo but i also noticed the boost pipe that goes behind the headlight which i'm guessing is the pipe from the intercooler had came off.

it was a popping noise so could the pipe have come off causing the stutter lack of power and black smoke or has the turbo let go?

thanks for any help thats given, i'm pretty gutted as i've just got the car back from having its cambelt done :(

Pipe has come off so now there is nowhere near enough air getting into the engine hence all the black smoke.

I think you've more or less diagnosed it yourself, they can go with a he'll of a pop when they go, there's a couple of bars of pressure there where you are going full bore so to speak.

Sounds like boost pipe to me. Much more common than the turbos letting go, but of course they have and do still let go. Chances are that gunk you can see from above the engine is just EGR gunk. You would very rarely get oil up there from a turbo letting go, but it would be dripping on the road.

Why?

Take it back to the garage and blame them - certainly it was the garage's fault when my 2004vRS went for the second time - the cambelt had been replaced the day before and the pipe pooped off at the top. On that occasion I just pushed it together and it was fine again for the 24k miles before I traded the car in. The bottom had popped off previously and I'd put that back together too - with a hoseclip holding the original clip in place - that repair lasted 44k miles...

Yeah try and fit it back together before buying a new one as they really ain't cheap... If your really worried about it put cable ties around it like a cradle to hold it together... Not pretty but will do the job :)

Those hoses cost a fortune from skoda, unless the hose has split I wouldn't bother buying a new one.. you could probably jest get away with a new hose clip.

It looks like it has split but i couldnt tell in the dark.

i dont think the garage will have had anything to do with it, I know them really well as mates and always do a top job. I'll still give him a ring though.

From what i felt it was split though where the aux belt had dug into it. why are they so expensive? only bloody plastic :D I'll try and fix it with some cable ties and metal clips i have laying around.

thanks guys.

managed to fix it, was a bit of a mare removing the bumper and headlight to get to the boost pipe.

reversed the corner pipe that connects to the cooler because the clip holders have worn right down so it shouldnt come off but we'll see.

Do samco kits prevent this happening by not having those crappy clips?

Yeah but they aint cheap either man

I fixed mine by taking the undertray off - didn't need to take the bumper off.

I replaced this pipe a few months back. It was £33 from TPS. So not dear really.
