Heated Wing Mirrors ConFUSED - see what I did there

Featured Replies

Does anyone know which fuse is responsible for the heated wing mirrors. They don't appear to be working so I don't know if the element has gone, but in both or it is just a fuse. I suppose 7 years of use could have worn them out as I usually forgot to turn them off.

Had a look through the manual and can't see a reference to the mirrors although there is something for auxiliary heating but I thought this was for none uk models.

If it isn't the fuse I take it replacing the mirrors is straight forward?

For reference my octy is a 2006 Octy 1.9tdi 4x4

Thanks in advance

Ive heard of the heating element wearing out, that and the glass delaminating from the reflective backing

I don't think the wing mirrors are fused.

Does the electrical adjustment still work? If so see post #2.

I think I might just replace the glass and see if that makes a difference. The motors work so maybe it is old age.

If they have both failed it could very likely be the Relay SHZG/449 giving in. Mine have failed too, just not getting time to check why.

To check if the Mirror Element is fine, just pull out the Mirror and connect it directly to the Battery to see if they heat up. There is a pair of Leads of the Heating Element connected onto the back of the Mirror.

One of mine has gone. Must be an age thing.

Yeah, probably, but what about the heated mirrors?! ;)

Both of mine have stopped working although wierdly VCDS says only passenger side is faulty.

I've always left my wing mirors on the heated setting and after nearly 7 years they're still working fine. I thought they had an automatic cut-out after 15 minutes or so, like the rear screen demister?

Apparently not. Like you my wife has left ours on since new for 7 years + and they have finally succumbed to the pressure. I also thought they had a cut-off timer but apparently not.

When I looked in my manual it said the only time they would turn off is if the temp was 20 degrees or more. Can't remember if that was outside temp or temp of mirrors. Didn't mention anything about time.

On the wives A3, the heated mirrors are connected to the heated rear window so turn off when that does. More sensible idea I think.

it is worth cleaning the contacts as they can corode

My wife's jazz is the same. Seems like a sensible way of doing it if you ask me

It's the outside temp, the Mirrors do not have any temp sensors.

I find this precondition quiet silly actually; it's like saying it will JUST NOT rain when the temp is over 20 degs. It sometimes rains here even at 35+ degs and even though the Mirrors have the capability to demist by heating they will not, just because of this 20 degs threshold and I'm forced to clean them manually.

Didn't know on A3 they were interconnected, thanks for the idea, I will attempt connecting mine too once I find time, but first they need to be fixed.

There is a setting in Central Electr., don't remember quiet well, but I guess it is one of the Adaptations where you set the time for the cut-off, 10 mins by default and is common to both heated Rear Wind Screen and the ORVM's.
