As some will know, I seem to have caught the modding bug and my vRS is booked for remap etc,got to thinking that with such an increase over standard it might be prudent to look at a brake upgrade.

Don't want to go mad as it is only a road car,was thinking along the lines of fast road pads - what do you think ??

:drive1:

Dave , my guess is that as you only use your car on the road and don't do that many miles (about the same as me ) that the standard brakes and pads will do fine .

But if you want to spend some money on upgrading the brakes , then I suppose it depends on how deep your pockets are :D

Depends what you want them for (ever helpful me :D ).

Just road use? Change the pads and fluid

Bit of track use? As above

Quite a bit of track use? Do the disks (or if you happen to drive rather briskly on the road ;) )

Extensive track work or you feel that you want more feel, possibly more power? Full on AP

Jon

Ditto. :)

Thank's guy's was kinda thinking the same, and mellowyellow contrary to current spend - my pockets are not that deep.

I made the mistake of adding up the costs of all work about to be done -- BAD IDEA... :D

If you do decide to do an upgrade talk to Ian Godney at Godspeed 01656 660899. All he does is brakes & hes not in the habit of selling you more than you need, I was looking at going the full AP 6 pot route but as he explained theres no point as without slicks you wont gain a lot over 4 pots & I have found the 4 pots + Toyos are running the ABS pretty hard, I now need to look at the rears as it feels as though the back is under braked.

I would suggest you start with decent fluid & some ferrodo ds 2500 pads, then maybe group N discs, Jon (TaviaRS) has this on his I believe & the stopping is more than adequate, even for a lot of track use although I believe the brakes are fairly grabby.

Also I would say from previous experience with my Subaru IMO steer clear of anything by EBC, the adverts are great but the product is ****

Stuart

Say the vrs was 300bhp, would drilled and grooved disc and ferrodo pads be sufficient?

Yes, IMHO, but having saoid that, it depends on your driving style

Been Jabba'd and drive like a loony some times but I can honestly say I've never feared the standard brakes failing. If I was a track day kiddie, I'd deffo have a look at a brake upgrade though :)

About the drilled & grooved disks...

This is from the FAQ at Wilwood site:

Q: Why are some rotors drilled or slotted?

A: Rotors are drilled to reduce rotating weight, an issue near and dear to racers searching for ways to minimize unsprung weight. Drilling diminishes a rotor's durability and cooling capacity.

Slots or grooves in rotor faces are partly a carryover from the days of asbestos pads. Asbestos and other organic pads were prone to "glazing" and the slots tended to help "scrape or de-glaze" them. Drilling and slotting rotors has become popular in street applications for their pure aesthetic value.

So why to go for another disk?

Are the RS's disks large enouph and upgrade only the calipers?

Have anyone done this?

Second:

What are the dimensions of the standard RS fron disk?

(diam & thick)

Third:

If we change, for example, the front brake system with a stronger one does the Electronics for Braking needs some adjustmens?

Is there a possibility to make braking no so strong as the stock ones?.

Are the VRs's front disks 312mm a la TT setup?

300+bhp into these will produce serious heat.... beyond reliability.

Depending on wheel sizes/offsets, something along the lines of a Leon-R Brembo setup might help out a lot. Various kits available badged as GT kits etc...

I bought Mikes (Jabba) MKIV Golf a while ago and it runs the TT's 312mm's and they do not cope at all when used in anger. Brembo's are ready for fitting now so will see how they fair.

You have to factor power/weight and usage to see if your brakes are adequate for your use.

bill

they are 312 mm al la tt...

Thick??

no im not.

hehe.. 312 x 25's then..

fick but not as fick as 323x28 Brembo's

Heat dissipation and cold air ducting is a must have if pressing them into serious use (eg track bashing)

cheers for the info.

bill
