Talk to me about Towbars

1.9 PD Pre-FL Elegance Hatch (with PDC)

Am after both sockets (I believe "twin electrics" is the accepted name).

Not fussed about detachable ball, unless there is a major benefit.

Located in the Redhill area.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

The major benefit of a detachable ball is that it doesn't mess with the PDC, and that it doesn't permanently make the car ugly.

Not sure if the UK standards for this is different but we've had an adopted 7-pin plug standard here in Finland for decades. Nowadays it's common to have 13 pins on the car, and an adapter to make it fit 7-pin trailers. 7 isn't quite enough sometimes, for example when you want a constant 12V for charging the battery in your caravan. Or reversing lights.

too true.

My vrs came with a towbar with twin electrics. I've removed the ball and back plate and now my PDC has stopped playing up. Also made the back end look much better although there is still the ugly bit from the chassis left

I have been told that 13-pin is an EU-wide thing. The trailer is 7-pin, was going for twin as it has been mentioned about getting a new trailer at work.

I'll be getting privacy glass, sunglasses, a dear-stalker and a full beard before having a caravan. ;)

Nowt wrong with a dear-stalker

My fixed towbar doesn't cause any problems with parking sensors.

towbars save bumpers!

I have a detachable but leave it permanently in situ for several reasons:

1) It looks better than a fixed towbar

2) They are less likely to interfere with the rear parking sensors

3) The brackets and sockets are hidden

4) These days they aren't much more money

I paid £300 for mine fitted including VAT.

Get a proper trailer on there! :giggle:

You mean like a caravan? No thanks!

My little Erde doubles my boot capacity. The double height bars and cover I now have fitted triples my boot capacity. The trailer together with the roof box quadruples my boot capacity.

If I needed anything more I'd buy a van!

All this for when the wife wants to go away for a weekend! ;):)

Hahaha , not far wrong!

Me, the wife and our little daughter. None of us really know how to pack light!

I have a swan neck towbar on my Octy and it doesn't interfere with the sensors at all, depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. Cheapest is a fixed ball with a single 7 pin socket and bypass electrics, though that does mean that all the features available like bulb out warning, fog light disable and parking sensor disable won't work. To get that you need a vehicle specific wiring kit which is more involved, needing wiring to the front of the car and recoding.

Do you need a twin 7 pin set up? It would only really be worth it if you are planning on towing a caravan as the additional grey plug does the reversing lights, caravan battery charging and on the move fridge power supply.

If you fancy a trip down the A3, I can whole heartedly recommend these guys. They fitted my swan neck towbar, twin 7 pin electrics and recoded the car, for just under £400 if I remember correctly, and did it all in an hour and a half whilst I had the cup of tea they made and read a magazine.
