The new Monte Carlo Mods...?

Featured Replies

It seems that the moment our MC arrives at the start of March that I shall have to seek improved headlight bulbs...What the recommendation from other drivers on the best route to go?

I would also like to fit LED DRL's, anybody have them fitted? photos for appreciation are most welcome!

Do SKODA supply DRLs at a price or is that too much to look forward to..?

Finally, whats the curved piece of black plastic, about 10" - 12" high, situated clipped to the offside wheel arch in the boot? is this some type of cheap storage device?

Safe driving - the Beast from the East is still lurking just around the corner...

Nightbreaker + in ours, no help on the LED though and yes the plastic thing is a shopping bag retainer; use it all the time to keep bits in that otherwise would slide round the boot.

I forgot to change my bulbs and am now so used to the dim glow they provide, that my eyes have adapted (I hope)!

The plastic clippy mesh thing fits into slots on the right hand side of the boot. I have the spare oil bottle, some water, other gubbins in there so they don't slide. Hasn't been an issue yet and I occasionally fill the boot quite full.

I'm assuming the LED DRLs is just for appearances? You can't see them, so why bother?

I have changed the Monte Carlo black projector headlamps (Single 55w bulb with deflector plate to dip the beam) to the standard clear headlight (2 x 55w bulbs in each lamp). What a difference light to see in the dark!

Thanks Guys;

PDIBK - You may well be unaware that all new cars will shortly be run with DRLs...by law...it's not a "Fashion statement"...it's to be seen! Volvo? Remember, you saw it there 1st?

If you run on Hids you will accelerate the replacement & they are not cheap!...some such as my Superb run at 80%.

The option as I see it on the MC is to fit LED - To be seen in normal daylight...however there are those who insist on little lamps in daylight - what the rest of the motoring world know - are called....Parking lights! For the most obvious of reasons...

So back to searching for LEDs.

Do I understand that the MC headlight bulbs are black? in addition to the smoked headlamp covers?

Regards,

TDM.

FAO ZETORMAN:

I'm interested...please tell me more?

How do you replace 1 bulb with 2? It sounds like you know what you are doing...Please give a short step x step.

Is it simple to access both headlamps from under the bonnet, or do you have to remove the battery etc on one side?

Or, is the MC one of those rare cars where the driver can quite simply replace a duff bulb by the side of the road?

Please keep it simple!

Cheers,

TDM.

He has fitted the normal twin halogen bulb light units from an elegance or SE model.

These have a separate H7 main beam bulb whereas the projector lights in the Monte and vRS share the same bulb for both dipped and main beam.

An understandable move but expensive....but I could recoup some of the cost by selling my useless but trendy looking dark projector ones to the gullible..I must give it some thought.

ps my drls are switched off and will remain so.

I'm sure you are well aware the Monte already has DRLs fitted which are perfectly visible/fit for purpose. Granted they are not nice LED items so I can see why you would want to make a cosmetic upgrade. They don't need to be LED to comply with the law however!

Seconded - My Moonte has DRLs. They contain bulbs. With filaments. They're plenty bright enough (subjectively, compared on my garage door at night to the woeful headlights).

Soooo< I wouldn't change the standard ones to LED ones like the VRS has (but VRS doesn't have fog lights), as it seems pointless, other than for other people to say the LEDs look more pretty than the standard items, so I'm back to I can't see it, I'm not fussed.

I also wouldn't change the black headlight units for the standard clear ones, as the black units finish the Monte off and match the black detailing - wheel arch surrounds, roof, spoilers, splitters, diffusor etc. Sticking clear lights on would look worse, to me, as I WOULD see the lights every time I approached the car, but not see the DRLs lit.

BUT, the issue seems to be the standard silver/clear surrounds give a better light than the black units. But as I said, I have just got used to the poor light (it's not dangerous and I know I am not dazzling oncoming traffic with blue/white mega-lamps, as fitted to most new cars).

Personal choice though - as with any car mod. Just pointing out that the standard DRLs are there and do the job. Unless you try and drive around at night with them on (like I see around here - Dark, older cars, side lights on, front fogs on...nobbers).

w11a,

re DRL's.

Yes new cars that are Type Approved after the start date for Manufacturers having to fit as standard,

& will have DRL's fitted as standard, (2011)

just as new Type Approved after November 2012 will have TPMS as standard.

No news of 'soon' all new cars will be 'run with DRL's' or that the Driver has to have them on.

Just they will be fitted as standard.

No news of DRL's being tested in the UK MOT from January 2014 or even 2015/16/17
