Engine light and loss of boost

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I'm a rare visitor to the Octy section but I have a question, albeit about the Octy's Spanish cousin.

I was "lucky" enough to be given the company's work '03 plate Seat Leon Cupra R for a short but urgent journey this morning.

I was warned by the fleet manager that it was "not in the best of health but still ran ok"

On climbing in the EML light was on but it started and drove out of the carpark fine .

Only upon being greeted with the slip road onto a dual carraige way and attempting any kind of proper acceleration did i find the extent of the problem.

All was fine until around 2.5k revs when the power delivery stuttered, fluttered, swayed, slowed, and eventually picked up again at around 3.5k by which point the EML light was flashing, before settling into a steady glow again.

It also seemed to drink fuel like it was going out of fashion (even more so that i expected for a 1.8T) with the last hour and half on the OBC showed a worrying 22mpg!

The journey also include fews stops at various places and after a couple the dash was also glowing with the TCS light despite me not turning it off.

and a dump of the clutch proved that it was indeed disabled but pushing the button had no effect.

I haven't had chance to speak to the manager but i know the lady who was running it everyday recently changed car possibly because of the issue and i think the plan was to sell the Leon off cheap due it's 144k mileage and the cost of the repair.

Is it something that can be diagnosed easily from the symptoms?

Does this sound like a quick (ie cheap) fix to make it worthwhile taking a punt on buying it off my work?

Any advice gratefully received

Sounds like maf is playing up :-)

Unplug the MAF and see how it goes from there.

I would first get it plugged in to a computer so see what faults it brings up.

I did wonder if it was MAF related as it seemed to be starving itself of air hence the lack of boost and injecting too much fuel hence the thirst.

If it was mine i'd investigate further but i'll ask probing questions to the fleet manager to see what the plan is

It's spanish. They only work half days
