Dull sound after shocks and top arms replaced

Featured Replies

Hello,

Have a problem wit front suspension.

I got shocks(Bilstein b6) and top arms replaced by the garage but now got a dull clunk sound when I go over rough surface or speed bumps.

The sound appears when when the wheel is going down into the pot hole or down the speed bumps. It is happening on both sides.

The top mounts and bump stops were also replaced at the time.

Got the car in 2 different garages both of them are saying everything is fine.

Visibly it all looks ok but the clunk defiantly should not be there.

Does anyone have any pointers what to check or what could be causing this?

I'm think of taking the shock out and check if it was put together properly but would like to check the obvious things first.

Thank you

Could be the springs not put in correct orientation relative to shock. Check the stops, spring end should be just before or at the stop, not past it. Another possiblity is that upper arms were not placed at correct angle before tightening, though I'd expect a squeak/creak from that. Finally, a loose engine cover, driveshaft cover, or bumper cover? Check all bolts are there and tight.

This is another example of basically if you can do it yourself, do it yourself. I marked my old spring orientation before fitting the new springs.

Many garages just blindly ignore this.

Perhaps the top mounts were not quite suitable for your car, especially if aftermarket. I too have B6 front shocks and I changed the upper arms too and springs at the same time, being careful with the orientation of the spring and the angle of the arms when applying torque to the arm bolts, and the front end is silent like a Dodo.

One other thing coming to mind would be loose pich bolt on one or both sides.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll try to check these on the weekend(depending on weather)

40Nm for the pinch bolts from memory.
