What to look out for?

Featured Replies

Hello!

Wasn't sure where to put this as it's a 'buying' question as well as tech!

I'm looking at buying an Octavia 1.9TDi from 2001-2003 (can't afford anything above that at the moment), however the issue I'm presented with is.. I don't know anything about them. I don't know what usually goes wrong, what to look for etc.

Does anyone happen to have a dummies guide to buying 2nd or 3rd hand Skoda's?

I'm buying from some way away from my local area, as most within 50 miles are stupidly priced. I really don't want a wrecked motor 150 miles from where I got it.

Cheers!

Le' bump! Still no idea what to look out for. :(

1.9tdi needs cambelt done every 40k miles or 4 years. If it snaps the engine is wrecked. The waterpump and tensioners etc need to be changed at the same time as the pump may fail. If its a cheap car its up to you whether this is a concern to you. Other than that check for excessive smoke on start up and when the engine is given some beans. I'm pretty sure a little black smoke on WoT is normal however a lot isn't.
