Chipped Octavia Tdi

Featured Replies

I recently had a chip fitted to my L&K TDI by my Skoda dealer (who shall be nameless).

The chip is made by Weber but I don't have any other information.

I am delighted with the power increase and the fuel consumption is marginally better.

My problem is with the trip computer.

Since fitting the chip, it underreads fuel consuption by about 20%, indicating an average of about 64mpg instead of the true 53mpg.

My dealer is investigating but does anyone else have any ideas?

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Weber chip?

This was the only 'fault' that I had when I chipped my A4 110 TDi Quattro (same engine) a few years ago. The Audi DIS (driver info system) over-read by 10%.

I doubt that there is a solution, other than working out the mpg from the fuel put in for a while then just factoring the readout downwards. I didn't bother in the end as the engine performed so much better!

If you think about the technical side, you are 'mainly' just adding more fuel when chipping a TDI rather than a petrol engine. Some tuning boxes actually work on the 'confuser' principle to alter the signal between the ECU and fuel pump. I would guess that the Weber (is it a chip or add on?) is a rebadged version of someone else's and works on the same method ?

The Weber is a little black box that fits neatly on the bulk head. It has a switch that allows me to turn the "boost" on and off.

The dealer told me that the system is an "add on" and can easily be removed to put the engine back to standard.

Can the trip computer be recalibrated to get the fuel consuption closer to reality?

So its more like a tuning box then.

As fabpreza said this intercepts the fueling signal between ECU and injector/pump. The trip computer must calculate mpg from information provided by the ECU (along with other variables)

As the tuning box "fools" the fueling system into supplying more fuel than the ECU is programmed to supply, you will end up with inaccurate trip computer readings.

This is how i understand it anyway.

BTW is your car under warranty? If so you have a very understanding dealer!
