sos: help with rear brakes....

Featured Replies

so i want to clean, check, replace if necessary brake shoes on Octavia, first registered in 2008, (octavia tour 1.4)

I have removed wheel, released handbrake, pushed the pin inside the drum upwards to loosen shoes, removed the torx screw but the drum wont budge.

I've tried hitting it with a hammer, are these brakes a different setup to other vw, audi skoda range. Usualy this is how i remove drums but htis time, it just wont work.

any ideas?

have you removed the hub nut?

do i have to remove the hub nut as well? the 32/33 mm socket?

If so why does the drum have the torx screw to hold it to the hub?

thanks

pass as i have never worked on an octy with drum brakes rather than disc, but you may well have to

You will probably find that a huge lip has been formed on the inside of the brake drum, and the brake shoes will have adjusted themselves up to the worn drum. There is no need to remove the hub nut usually. A good prybar each side of the drum, between the drum and backplate should help with a bit of persuasion, but if you are too rough, or the lip is too large it is possible to break the pins which hold the shoes to the backplate, or even rip the lining from the shoe. Make sure replacement parts are easily available before you continue, and be sure to remove the lip on the drum if you are re using it. Take care not to contaminate the bearings with grinding dust, or you will need to strip them down again in the near future.

Hi, I'm new but I do my octavia brakes and Quarry Bodger is giving you good advice I got my hubs off with 2 long screwdrivers either side and worked them off.Sometimes the shoes may have come out of position espescially if the pins are worn which also makes it difficult to get the hubs off. Be firm but careful. Good Luck.

on my car 1.6 octavia i have to remove the hub nut in order to remove the drum.
