EGR "Turned down" - Turbo Blown? Linked?

Featured Replies

Aye up..

As you know, my Turbo's popped..

The Internetz seems to think that this could* be a result of me having the EGR "turned right down" in VCDS at about 60k. (it's now on 88k)..

1st thing.. The garage claim they did it, and Fabiavrs.com used to have instructions.. But many people on here have said that it doesn't work, and it can't be done via VCDS??

2nd thing... Do we believe that deleting the EGR, or even reducing it can prematurely cook a Turbo? I think the internetz is concerned it actually increases the Exhaust temperature going through the turbo (whilst lowering intake temperatures)..

I'm just wondering what your opinions are? I'm not really sure on both counts.

What IS interesting is that I noticed my engine cooling fans kicking in whilst idling before turning off the last few times I've driven it (before Mr Turbo got too vocal)... that's the 1st time I've ever heard them, even in summer.. Is that just increased engine bay temperatures from the Turbo's rattly bearing increasing friction??.. Or something more sinister?

*could - as in, might be complete bo11ocks.

Having had a blown turbo, you'll spend a load of time what you shoulda, woulda, coulda done to make it last longer.

I had just changed a boost pipe, fitted an EGR delete literally the week before mine went and asked myself loads of questions what if? Etc etc.

The truth is it could go at anytime, I considered my self lucky I'd done 120k on the standard turbo, 90k of which was remapped.

My approach now with the Roomster is not if the turbo goes, but when the turbo goes. Secretly, its a great excuse for a hybrid.

"but the uprated stronger replacment turbo is only £200 more dear".......

anything that is mechanical will eventually break ... put it down to experience and dont worry about it lol

point so consider with the new turbo

when starting the car always give it 30seconds on tick over to let oil pressure build up before driving

at the end of a journey long or short ... let the engine tick over for around 30 seconds to let the turbo wind down

these 2 points are good practice to have with all cars but can help prolong turbo life

I believe turning it down through vag com is not a permanent fix. It resets after the car is turned off.

That's what Awesome said recently after a customer enquiry.

Huh.. That's interesting. It took less then 5 minutes and wasn't reflected on the bill, so perhaps you're right and they simply humoured me?

I must admit, I probably could let the car idle a little longer before setting off.. But I never hoof it until warm.. I'll take note, though.. I do let it cool down... perhaps I could let it cool for longer. NEVER switched it straight off though.

Thanks...

My red car has been remapped for over 80k and is approaching 130k total, it's done thousands of dual carriageway and motorway cruising miles as well as been hooned around Cornish B roads, and been chucked around various airfields and Castle Combe at maximum attack. The EGR seeped oily gunk for years and some services had lengthy gaps between them.

Of late it's also started to be treated with less regard for it's health. not waiting for the glow plug light to go out on starting, some performance before the temp guage moves, hardly any, ok no warm down time after journeys.

It's still on it's original turbo.

The black car from what i understand lead a very sheltered existence before we bought it last year, mostly left in the garage while a work van was used 99% of the time hence it has only done 50k and it completely standard.

However it's on it's second turbo while in my ownership and an educated guess says it could be the 3rd in it's life.

Your numbers came up in the KKK turbo lottery Rob think about it no more than that.

Fair enough... Nicely put :)

Pasty summed it up nicely, no point looking too in depth, KKK turbo's reliability is a lottery, although it generally seems to be not if, but when it goes. Mine only reached 60k before shedding it's inside, was standard when I bought it about 6k miles ago, and been treated reasonably well in my care.

IMO, don't see why turning down the EGR (which might not even have lasted it seems :giggle: ) would have a significant effect on the turbo, as it can be deleted easily.
