CV Joint ? DIY Job?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a knocking noise whenever I turn right at junctions etc. I am guessing this is the CV Joint, is there a more definitive way to confirm this?

Also, if the CV Joint is at fault, is this something I could do myself? I am not scared of trying things out, but is there anything that would may be a bit difficult? Does anyone know of any guides etc that have been done? Google doesn't seem to spit out any real results.

Also, a second possible related issue. Braking is fine under normal day to day driving, but under severe emergency stop type situations as the car is slowing to an almost stop there is very strange feeling through the pedal, like several large thuds as though the wheel is jumping/skipping a gear so to say.... Could this be related to the CV joint or there another force in play?

Cheers,

Kyle

I wouldn't personally attempt this DIY. You need to break the bottom ball joint to get the driveshaft out so its a PITA to do on a drive. I'd always go to my friendly mechanic for such a repair.

Is the feeling through the pedal the ABS kicking in? That feels like a thud I suppose

sounds more like a bad joint or top mount I would check all that out before attempting the cv job-- for that you will need a ?mm thin 12 point socket

if you was going down the cv joint route im sure it would be alot easier to buy a 2nd hand drive shaft off ebay / scrap yards etc .... and swap the full unit

It's not just the single thud, its a couple of them. As if I've got momentary square wheels...

Which joint do you mean, and what would I look for in checking it and the top mount?

Sorry to be such a newbie, but I always say if you ask you don't learn...

I've swapped CV joints on other cars before - plan for a full day in case you run into trouble. it's do-able but as mentioned some tools are required that might not be in a DIY'er tool box.

I don't buying some tools to get the job done, figure they will come in use in the future.

Can you think of any specifically, besides a hub nut socket and a ball joint separator?

suspensions can be tricky as there is so much force involved I would ask someone (mechanic) to take a look and show you what he's looking for- if I remember rightly the cv joint just knocks off the shaft without having to remove it-- instead of splitting the ball joint you can undo the three small bolts you may need new ones after.--- p.s. that'll be socket and breaker bar
