Noob questions

Hi Every one

I've just read the Buyers guide on the Mk 1 Octavia VRS (Very informative I must say)

But a couple of questions to go with it, I'm aware of the 1.8T oil pick up issues as I was an mechanic a few years ago so changing one wont be an issue in the slightest.

My first question is at what sort of mileage do they tend to fail? as the cars I'm looking at in my budget have between 65-75K on their clocks with FSH, Its going to be my daily driver so needs to be reliable.

Second question is what sort of tank rang can I expect out of one? My daily commute is 36 miles so 170 miles a week, and its all 50/60 mph limits, due to traffic you usually have too sit at those speeds as its country A roads.

Thanks in advance

Phil

hi phil, welcome!

tbh they can go at anytime, new or old, have had some that have lasted ages, and others that have not, genuine one are the way ahead don't get cheapies!

Most old coilpacks are covered by the recall via skoda uk, think only the L & K versions aren't covered if iirc.

I always keep a couple spare in the boot for this reason.

Hi Phil as long as it has had regular oil changes using correct oil the 1.8 t engine is a reliable performer and will do many miles. I changed oil pick up at 80 k for peace of mind and it was like new when removed. As for mpg on your 36 mile commute if you get 30 mpg and about 300 miles to a full tank you will be doing ok.

Thanks for the quick response guys and the warm welcome! :)

I think I'd change the pickup ASAP if not done already just for peace of mind I think also

I thought they would get more to a tank than that! That's surprising actually

you can get more, had mine get over 40mpg on a trip at around 65mph with cruise control on so 400ish to a tank.

33mpg is fair, 38mpg to 40mpg possible, but you do have to drive live a saint. Any multiple stops at traffic lights will push you down to 30mpg though. Town/city cars they ain't.

yes, 40 wasnt my overall average, more my general average on the motorway for quite some time driving on a flat road through france at that time (for several hours).

Im lucky once im out my housing estate my commute is more often than not sat at 50 behind a bus or lorry so driving like a saint comes naturally as its mostly double white lines on the route. Doesn't tend to drop below 50 either so it's quite a good route for economy

400 to a tank I can cope with!

As comfy as my golf GT tdi is its not the most exciting thing to drive hence the hankering for a skoda!

I mostly get 300-330 out of a tankfull. (55litre-ish)

This +1

Is the 150bhp in the elegance any better on fuel?

I get 500km from a tank, up to 700 on a long run but that was before the stage 2 map :)

My oil pickup pipe after 118,000km

yes just to clarify, the 400ish was on a run, motorway crusing, around town ie my normal driving, i can't get that, nearer to 300 i would expect.

That's a lot less than I though they would do!

you want better mpg, stick with the gt tdi, a much better engine for economy!

Oh yeah I know its ok for mpg I get 51.3 most mornings it's just when on the rare occasion I get to open it up I really miss having a petrol, diesels really don't float my boat.

Plus the golf really isn't all that great at handling with the heavy diesel up the front.

I may be lucky with mine but I would be annoyed getting any less than 350 from a tank at normal driving. if I'm stopping, starting sitting in traffic it is very bad but generally on regular runs of 20+miles I do in the country at steady 50mph like you say you do, I have seen the computer at 48mpg+ regularly (around 5-10% optimistic compared to the pump values) and if I avoid the town driving for a whole tank it returns over 40mpg at the pump. What makes my fuel consumption drop the most is cold starts in town. Remapping has made it a little harder to keep the figures as high but not very much lower.

Same run with me following my brother in his PD 130 Bora around 260 miles driving very conservatively with a bit of hard acceleration here and there. Both tanks to the brim at the start and then to the brim at the end was just over 21 litres for the Bora and 29 litres for my vRS.

Just do a few performance mods and have it remapped then. The vRS has no bottom end to speak of (as standard), and you'll probably miss that torque even more if you do give up the diesel.

It's more the fact that its a diesel that's the issue with me I know I could get it remapped (R-Tech is 2 minutes away from my house) and lowered so it would handle better but I've never felt the love for the golf
