Replace 5 speed box for 6

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Does anyone know if I can put a 6 speed box on my ASV engine that currently has a 5 speed box?

Yes, you need gearbox, driveshafts, flywheel, clutch, new console mount, a bunch of new bolts, preferably stronger gearbox side mount and dogbone mount, 2 people as the 6-spd is a lot heavier, VCDS to change speedo pulse divider and a whole lot of time. You can reuse original shift cables and lever, and have a "secret" 6th gear.

If the car has airco, an additional support for the airco pipes is needed, be prepared for clearance issues when fitting the box. On factory 6-speeds airco lines were re-routed. 5spd airco routing is OK, you just need an extra support on a side of gearbox and to be careful when fitting. The payoff is longer gearing in 6th and marginally better fuel economy, unless you drive autobahn in which case you can save up to 15% in fuel at close to top speed. I did that in 2003, specifically for overnight travel across Europe.
