Front suspension boing! Boing!

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a problem with my 2002 110 tdi octavia, when maneuvering in tight spaces and using full lock it makes noise as though coil spring on the front o/s strut is turning out of the seating. Guy who does my repairs says it's the bearing on top of the strut failing in this ****y wet salty weather!

Can I get all the parts from gsf parts to do the repair.....can't get guy to do work for 3 weeks, he says it will be alright until then.

Hi

Thanks DBP for your reply. Just got round to the repair come some dry weather. Jacked up the car and found the coil spring is broken...a piece about 40 mm off the top of the spring was laying in the strut cup. OK so I have to take the strut assembly out .......under the bonnet is a 21mm? nut and 7 mm allen head, is ok to take the nut off to get the cup off..... will anything fly apart. What is the procedure please.

Somehow thought it'll be a broken spring when you posted the first time lol

Think top mounts would be more of a creaking noise

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

Hi

I have since done a search on the site and found that I can take the top nut off as there is another one under that. Also found a exploded view of the strut assembly. I read that strut can give some grief getting it out of its seating in the hub assembly.

Going to order a pair of springs from Europarts 40 quid, if anyone knows of cheaper or better quality please let me know

Take the 15mil out the hub, knock the strut out the hub, might need to bar lower arm down,

Take 21mil nut off top mount and drop strut,

clamp spring up with clamps and undo other nut and undo to end of threads and then tighten clamps up

take nut off and top mounting and remove spring,

let clamps off get new spring and clamp up,

refit in reverse order

Cheers Volvomeg

Common problem spring breaking , due to bearing seizing.

As Volvomeg states easy job really.

You found out that yes you do have a inner nut on suspension strut that holds top mount and bearing in place so you are good to remove the top nut without stuff flying off.

I recommend as also mentioned you use spring compressor to make job to remove out from wing easier else you will have a tight space to get strut out.

You will also have fun knocking strut out of hub if you have not compressed spring as you won't have enough space / play so again makes life easier with spring compressors.

Also when you undo and remove the hub bolt and nut (15mm) the hub is still clamping the strut tight so use a large flat screwdriver or crow bar or similar to wedge in the back to split the hub open better. You will know exactley what i mean when you attempt to remove strut.

Spray lot's of WD40 between hub and strut to prepare is a good idea.

Once seperated from hub you are plan sailing.

Also keep spring compressor on struts to help remove the inner nut else the spring top hat will be under pressure.

allen key and spanner needed to remove inner nut shock will turn inside strut

good luck, sure you will be ok...

Thanks, great help thank Bowders 1. Your message just buzzed on my phone as I got it out. I did have to use the spring compressors to reduce the spring length as the top spring cap had come through the coils due to the spring breaking.

The car is a 2002 model having done 80k and things were not to badly corroded luckily. I did disconnect the ARB link to the wish bone for more movement.

Got onto a local Motor factors and the parts......£25 per spring , also bearings come as a kit. Every thing cleaned now waiting for delivery to local garage.
