Changing battery

Featured Replies

Hello people, long time, no see.

I had to buy new battery for my car.

Can anyone explain is it hard to change, and how to do it?

Also, what you think did I get right joice, because I had bought Varta Silver Dynamic 12v 85 ah, and Oem one- was actuall Varta but with "just" 74 Ah?

I forgot to say that my car is V6 2.5 TDI.

Learn from a pro not me...

These batteries are very heavy. I too have changed my original battery to a newer Vartar one that was higher powered BUT IN FACT a smaller physical size when I came to fit it!!!! You can buy a new bracket or I just bent mine so it held the battery firmly in place.

To give you a overview on what NOT to do but worked on the 1.9TD.... BUT really you should take the wipers out and the plastic shroud from the bottom of the windscreen. And you need a second person/

Remove plastic tray

Undo battery leads

Remove battery clamp

Climb on engine and kneel on top cover. (only do this if you mad.....) Otherwise find someone with very long and very strong arms.

Move the cable ducting out of the way.

Remove old battery it will just come out, but its VERY VERY heavy. WARNING You need to do it on a really warm day or the plastic panel will break IF YOU HAVE NOT REMOVED IT.

Pass to second person.

say phew.

Remove any rubbish from battery tray area or even remove them bungs.

Get new battery passed to you.

Put new battery in.

Clamp it up,

put cables on.

Put the tray back on.

Recharge the battery fully and off you go.

For the 2.5, best to remove the windscreen wiper cover, as the battery is wider, leaving not much room to take it out. You need 110TE sized battery, I use Exide EA852 which is very good and genuinely maintenance free (ie no standard battery with caps covered with a sticker like the OE Varta ones).

Other than that, it is 10/13mm bolts on a ratchet+extension. Remove the rubber bungs, 1 under battery tray, 1 on brake servo pipe, to prevent water buildup (if it has not been done already). Given wiper cowling is off, it is a good moment to check pollen filter seal and replace it.
