Grinding brakes

Featured Replies

Just after some advice really, and to see if anyone has experienced anything similar.

For the last while I have been getting a grinding noise from my brakes. It is worse when the car is cold and has been siting a while, although it is always present when coming to a stop.

I have spoke to my local Skoda garage and they have no availability to have a look at it for a couple of weeks. The technician has said it could be a stone lodged in between the brake disks and back plate and that braking aggressively and turning the wheel at the same time could dislodge it. I haven't had a chance to try this yet, but not really convinced.

She is a 61 plate with 9500 miles on the clock.

On a side note and possibly related - I fitted a set of mud flaps recently and Jesus hell it was hard to get the wheels off!

It could be a stone, or a completely worn out pad where the backplate is making contact with the disc. Frankly, it's the sort of thing that any reputable garage can handle so don't wait for the main stealer.

Sound most like rusty discs,

and starting from cold just a build up of surface rust which soon shifts.

Have you not had a look yourself.?

As well to remove the wheels and see that they are not corroding to the hubs if they have never been off.

The hub will need a little Copper Grease before replacing the wheels to make removing easier next time.

Easy enough to jack up and spin a wheel and see if there is a stuck stone.

(Your disc would clearly show the ring cut into by the stone by now, but thats unlikely unless it was a diamond and still in there.)

Take the wheel off and remove the stone if there is one, it does not require dismantling your brakes..

It does not require a Mechanic if you are able to change your own wheels.

Just make sure the car is safe when the wheel is off.

(EDIT,

sorry i missed the 'Mud Flap' bit,

so you know how to remove wheels and they have been off, which is good.)

Maybe look and see if your discs are like this after 2 winters.

(its not a warranty thing, thats just how they can go)

I had it for ages from the front right....just suddenyl stopped one day, im guessimg it was something trapped

All four wheels on my vRS do it. It's very noticeable just as the car comes to a stop. I had it back to the garage for them to check it out and they fobbed me off as just being fussy, told me they are pitted from not being driven enough. They said they gave them a clean (is that even possible) but it made absolutely no difference

Thanks George, great insight as always!

When I had the wheels off I was looking at the brakes, but to be honest I had no idea what I was looking for!

I thought it could be rust. I had an emergency braking incident about a month back and the noise went away, or at least got a lot less noticeable, but it soon came back.

I think I will take it to my local garage to get it checked out to put my mind at ease.

fletch555,

Yes its possibly to give them a clean.

A wire brush and then 'Brake Cleaner'. Even sand paper off some of the building up corrosion.

A £1 pack of Scrouring pads and remove some of the building up rust around the edge.

You can have your Discs Skiimmed professionally..

Or its a case of replacing with the very poor Skoda ones which rust as bad as the originals or trying to find slightly better quality ones.

That sounds pretty much dead on what mine are like!

I picked my Mk2 up yesterday and mine grind terrible, once the roads are dry im going to undertake an emergency disk skim (2 feet on the big pedal)

Every cold start in winter or rainy days i pull the hand brake on for the first few yards to clean off the surface rust from the rear discs,

then press the brake pedal a little to clean off the front and rear.

They corrode badly as do many new cars these days.

Just look at new ones sitting on the forecourts.

Newer 'Hyundai and Kia's are really bad.

New Subarus are just terrible.

These were new discs before the winter and the salt on the road started, not done many miles since fitted..

I have brake discs that are 8 years old and sit out all the time that do not rust like those fitted on Skodas.

*Replacements are available for only £48.62 a pair for the Front & £19.26 for a rear pair.*

mine are bad too, had them skimmed by the stealers but there just as bad, its an 'all the time' noise and not just from sitting overnight, they look fine to me too

also every now and again you can feel, and hear, a clunk through the brake pedal which the technician heard but has no answer for :/

I have this problem in my 1.4 pd tdi. I assume its a similar brake set up to the monte?..Took it to the garage and mines just due to lipped brake discs. Nothing to worry about as of yet, just slightly annoying. Discs are supposed to wear. Have them skimmed if its really driving you mad.

The OP is about a vRS i think, and discs front and rear.

At least with the Skodas with rear Drum brakes the rear brakes braking surface is not getting surface rust over night.

(just the exterior of the drum rusting before your eyes unless you do something to inhibit the rust your self.)

My new VRS is going to be sat in the car park for 5 or 6 weeks before I can drive it again. :-/

leave it in P with handbrake off, if in any doubt, use a few chocks

Lots of replies on this, thanks. It seems it's quite common.

Well, regarding the grinding noise - after taking my car out for a brisk Sunday drive, the grinding has gone. So, I guess it is just a build up of rust on the disks causing the noise. Actually the whole car feels better after giving it the beans. It is like the car has said to me... Finally! drive me like this more often :)

I'd got so used to just pottering along in D that I forgot just how much fun this car can be.
