Help with caliper rebuild

Featured Replies

As per previous threads.. i have the entire 312mm and 256mm brake setup sitting in my garage that i am about to rebuild.

I ordered this repair kit for the 312mm

http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1439.l2649

And i ordered this repair kit for the back

http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1439.l2649

I have taken delivery of both of the above and both kits although the correct diameter appear to be a lot thinner than the seals currently on the caliper and clearly wont fit properly.

i have contacted the seller of the repair kits who stated it will all depend on the year of car the calipers came off and if the rears are vented or solid disks....

I have no way of knowing what year the calipers came from and how do i tell if the rears are vented or solid caliper type?

Any suggestions would be welcomed, below are pictures of the calipers i have

They are both for vented discs, they look exactly the same as the ones on my car. Mine came off a 25th anniversary mk4 golf, which are 2002. So can't go wrong with that :) if you need a reg look on eBay for one and give them that.

They fit fine. I bought same ones and panicked, telephoned the seller. They went on just fine :) no issues at all.

The seals just look a lot thinner... BigRed have offered to take mine back and check i have the right ones against those pictures so hopefully it should get sorted.

When i come to buy pads and disks do i need to get vented disks and pads? confused.com

Well vented discs yes and pads to suit. like I say, get a reg off eBay from a 25th anniversary golf and use that for future brake parts.

jon_woo or anyone who done this:

I've bought full set from golf 25th anni and want to refurbish them but don't know how to get the pistons out from the front calipers. Any thoughts (btw they're not fitted on the car)?

Have anyone a link or part number for correct seals kit? Links here and in other topics are either dead or lead to different listings.

Thanks!

If you've got access to a air line use that into the hose inlet on caliper, short blast of air will blow it out.

If not a set of mole grips usaully pulls the piston out, turning as you pull helps I've found.

Unless they are majorly corroded/rusted up?

Type in biggred calipers on Google for parts :)
