Alternator Pulley Toast

Recommended Posts

Started getting a weird squeak from the alternator area, had the tensioning pulley replaced a couple of months ago when the timing belt was done and a new Aux. belt fitted at the same time, looks like the fooked tensioner has taken out the alternator pulley too, it's just taken a while to let go totally.

I can't do it myself because I don't have the special tool to get the pulley off.

Unfortunately I live 15 miles away from the garage I trust to do it, my question is (and I suspect I know the answer already) is it worth the risk of driving it very gently to the garage or do we think that will cause even more damage?

If I had the tool I would do it myself, ain't life a b*gg*r.

The only alternative I can think of is to take the damn thing off, get on a train, and get it to the garage that way. :wall::@

I would bet its the other way round, the pulley killed the tensioner. When I changed the pulley on my old car it seemed OK until I compared it to the new one.

The clutch pulley are you referring to? Mine is making a horrible rattling/clicking sound on start up for a few moments. I have the new one in the house and the spline tool, getting it fitted on Thursday all being well. I purchased the spline tool of ebay for a few quid.

The inner race mounting has broken up (causing the squeaking) the evidence is sprayed in a circle around the engine bay. What's left of the pulley is spinning and sliding along the shaft moving approx. 5-10mm. I have seen this before and it's defo. the clutch pulley for the alternator that I need.

I dunno how much the pulley is, but I got an alternator off a 2008 car for my Polo for £30. I doubt it'll be much more (if at all) for the 1.9 tdi. If anything, the mass deployment of the engine might make it cheaper.

Might be a cheaper way around the problem?

I got the pulley for £32, couldn't find an altenator for less than about half of that. Least I know what I'm getting now. Could have got a second hand one and the same thing happen. May have been worth a punt if it was dirt cheap tho.

The cheapest one I could find on fleabay was £29.99, I eventually managed to find one for £15-60 through work (a mates staff purchase price), then drove the car fifteen miles at no more than 1500 rpm and doing super smooth gear changes, and got the garage with the proper tool and more importantly the trust, to do the job for me, cost £60 all in.

So, no more squeaks, metal shavings or funny noises, job done. Thank goodness!

I got my new pulley fitted last night. But the rattling still persists? What else may be causing it?

Probably the tensioner is bust. on the PD engine it's a quick change, only three bolts, should take 10 minutes. Should only be about £30 for the tensioner.

The spring loaded one for taking off and putting on the belt? Again can this be done from the top of the car?

Also would this explain why the rattle occurs on startup and then disappears after about 1 minute but returns if I turn my lights on and then go again. Once the car been running for a good five minutes there's no noise at all. Would you know if its the tensioned cause I could try to get a vid up.

Also a link to a aux belt tensioner suitable for my car would be great, BLT engine. The later ones seem to be an all in one unit and the older seems to be a swing arm type. Can't see one listed for the BLT tho.

Edit:

Ok I've found a couple of links, slightly confused by the two. One says altenator belt tensioner and one says pulley.

This is the sort of thing you need but this is for a 2.0 pd engine

http://www.eurocarparts.com/mobile/ecp/c/Skoda_Octavia_2.0_2007/p/car-parts/engine-parts/belts-chains-and-tensioners/tensioners-idlers-and-dampers/?326441880&1&3cafeaa3f889757b601fc95198e4ddc68f01390d&000112

Your second link is the alternator pulley rather than the aux belt tensioner

The picture in your first link looks wrong but the text suggests its the right one. On your eBay list the fourth one looks right. I don't have s BLT engined car to hand so can't check. Your current one will have the part number on it so you could check it.

According to gsf car parts this is the correct one?

If you look at the description the car is listed in the comparability list

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380637837975

Edit

Really confused now,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=alternator+tensioner+1+9+tdi+vw&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=alternator+tensioner+1.9+fabia&_sacat=0

This link shows the gsf one pictured In another item listing but according to it it's the wrong one :( lol
