High pitched whining in cabin

Just got home from longish journey and noticed that there was a high pitched electronic whining coming from the car. I think it was from the stereo but even switched off the whining was audible. Tried turning the air con off and this didn't fix it either. It came and went intermittently but nothing I did seemed to solve it. Any one else had a similar problem?
