Manual FL VRS with Maxidot?

Featured Replies

I'm trying to find a FL VRS TSI with manual transmission and maxi dot but scanning through the used adverts nobody seems to have specified it! Am I wasting my time waiting to find a car with both manual transmission and maxi dot or should I just give up on the maxi dot?

Have you tried the DSG box ? It's a dream

I have always had manual cars and quite like having the ability to control the clutch in icey conditions. I live on quite a steep hill and its a nightmare in the winter. I'm not sure how confident I would be in the DSG in poor conditions.

Also a bit worried about what happens when the DSG is out of warranty and something goes wrong!

I also notice the DSG TSI is in an even higher tax band!

All this said, the MFSW and maxi dot are ideal features for me. I've come to terms with no MFSW bus was hanging on to the possibility of a maxidot.

mine has it, so it is possible!

Good to hear. Sourcing a second hand one is going to be a bit of a challenge I think! Shame it can't be retrofitted as pretty much everything else I'm after can.

Thanks. How can you tell? Neither states maxidot - they just say 'trip computer' which could be either. And no photos of it to see. Looking via my phone but pretty sure in getting the full site there!

If you look at the display between the rev/speedo theres an out line of the car in white == Maxi Dot

You need to look at them on a PC so you can magnify the pictures

Ah yes! Well done. That was a definite limitation of viewing on a small screen. Zoomed in and saw it. So there is hope!

Done! Incidentally I assume that once all the bluetooth gubbins is installed and correct that its relatively easy to control the phone / audio via the indicator stalk / maxi dot combo?

Don't know to be honest. I have a MFSW and DSG I have phone buttons on the wheel but no bluetooth module so I use a Bury H/F kit. I was quite suprised that I have phone buttons/phone on radio but no bluetooth module as standard. The bury works of me

Let us know if you source a motor

Ps:- Mikeholroyd's ( briskoda member ) is you man, if he doesn't know, no one will, he's a wizard

Thanks! Really helpful advice. Will let you know how I get on.

Mine is manual with maxidot. At the time I could only find two petrol vrs with the spec I wanted - maxidot, xenon and reverse park. Maxidot is great , definitely worth finding a car with it.

Mine is manual with maxidot too (and MFSW and Bluetooth)

Worth seeking a Maxidot equipped car if you can. You can always retrofit one but it's not cheap.

Wow. You retrofitted a MFSW? I cannot even begin to imagine what's involved with that. There are some cracking cars on Autotrader at the moment - all without maxidot. Maybe when the new VRS appears it will tease out a few decent spec face lifts from those looking to make a new purchase?

If it can be done, someone on Briskoda can do it

Something you'll tend to find is that nearly new manual cars, particularly turbo petrols are very rare and most are more or less standard specification.

I looked at a couple of used TSi estates before plumping for my new Blackline DSG and the specs put me off buying....partcularly as I really wanted Maxidot and Bluetooth and I wasnt going to typically find that on a manual car.

I very nearly factory ordered a car but in the end managed to secure one of the supposed last run of 100 blackline DSG estates; didnt come with BT but had Nav, Maxidot and MFSW due to the standard spec on the car which overall would have amounted to a 25.5k factory order. Transpired that the Amundsen + nav unit came with a built in BT module; Skoda UK just had not thought to enable it and install the mic and wiring from the factory (god knows why) £80, a VAG specialist and mechanic friends help later car now have full OEM BT albeit without voice control...no great shakes as it doesnt work well anyway.

My advice would be to find the car you want to the best spec possible whether it has maxidot or not as that is actually relatively easily retrofitted; a dash binacle swap and re-code. If you could source the correct Amundsen + headunit you could potentially quite easily add Nav, BT and DAB radio to the car too. People on here can help RE MFSW but it is quite an expensive job.

Probably the most important thing to have factory fitted if you want full integration is parking sensors. On the Octavia you also get Optical Parking System which not only bleeps but visually displays how close the car is to an obsticle per sensor on the cars stereo screen; this can be retrofitted but its a nightmare; a dealer fit setup would not give you OPS just the bleeping.

I had read on this forum that there wasn't a way to retrofit maxidot to FL mk2 cars, only pre FL. Is that not the case then? If so then all could be well!

The MFSW retrofit sounds like a bit of an insurance headache. Not sure I'd go down that route. I think I'd have to go for the DSG if I really wanted those controls. However I'm really not sure how it would cope with the hill I live on in winter time. I guess I could try the winter tyre route though.. I've always been a manual type if person though.

In my current car, a Vauxhall Astra Sri manual petrol, I use a basic Belkin Aircast bluetooth aux in thing that works pretty well for audio streaming from the iPhone. Phone calls are ok an it works fine with Siri. I also have an MFSW but only use the volume control on it. In my quest to go up in the world I was after a more integrated media/phone solution, more space and a fun drive. My Astra is actually a lot of fun to drive. The wife has a diesel 4x4 evoque which is ok but a bit high off the ground for my tastes. But that has all the media and phone stuff pretty ban on (as you'd hope!)

So the current car is too small but has MFSW, curtain airbags, gas bonnet struts, and handles well. I'll be sad to see it go but having done oodles of research I've locked onto the Octavia VRS. Have test driven the diesel which I liked a lot. I have the feeling that I may prefer the TSi though if I can ever get hold of one to try! But as you say, they are scarce (esp in Estate guise).

I hope that gives some useful background to my thought process. I'm massively appreciative of all your worldly wisdom and advice!

Maxidot can be retrofitted to FL

I have changed several Mk6 Golf Clusters and tried several VW clusters in my Vrs

I have a forum member coming tomorrow for a FL Maxidot, will take some pics

Hardest bit is finding the cluster as the dealer price is just crazy

New or Used cluster can be done
