which tool for oil filter cap removal (1.9pd)

Featured Replies

Going to do my next service myself - got a Pela extractor on the way and all the filters / oil from ECP. Which tool is recommended to get the cap off the oil filter in one piece?

i bought one in halfords for about £7 i think, brill tool just looks like a really big socket for your socket set

I think 32mm socket

76mm AF 14 sided socket.

Hey Roto - are you sure it is 76mm? I got one for my recent oil change and it seemed to spin on the filter housing slightly (making tool removal very difficult). As an aside, the cheap Sealey unit was a pain as the tip of the ratchet prevents the tool seating fully home on the oil filter housing cap, so you have to pull your ratchet out slightly.

I got this diecast 74mm unit to replace it with:

Which works perfectly and takes the ratchet all the way without interfering with the cap. So I'm not sure 76mm is really the right size?

The difference in performance between these two tools is night and day. One sticks and is fiddly because of the ratchet tip clearance, and the other is basically perfect.

If anyone else gets a diecast unit it is worth inserting and removing the ratchet a few times away from the vehicle - the first couple of times I put it in very small pieces of ali swarf came off unit.

thanks, I had seen the post in question before starting this thread but I was put off by the specific mention that it wasn't for some 1.9PDs... :(

Anyhow, the diecast one I got looks almost identical to that tool.

The 1.9 PDs it doesn't fit have the 32 or 36mm nut on the top.
