Factory fitted towbar instructions

Have made some progress and removed the stuck on plastic cap, but having difficulty getting the swan neck up far enough so it will lock into place. Any ideas?

I could never get the one on my previous Subaru to lock until I'd scraped out all the accumulated dust & dirt from the socket with a screwdriver & then sprayed it liberally with lubricant. Wouldn't lock until seated completely in the socket, even a small amount of debris would prevent it locking.

Forgot to say that it was also necessary to set the locking mechanism by twisting the lever anticlockwise against the spring until it clicks (the swan neck won't go into the socket fully until the mechanism is primed correctly), push the swan neck firmly into the socket it should then automatically lock in position. Turn & remove key to prevent tampering.

Just got it sorted with half a can of wd40 and working it back and forth for an hour! Should I be putting some form of lubricant in to prevent it happening again? Also could do with a new plastic cap if anyone knows where to get them? Cheers

IS IT A WESTFALIA TOWBAR

Good to hear you got it sorted. Due to position it will attract plenty of crud (technical term) if not used regularly. I never found anything that would keep it working smoothly, most lubricants just attract dirt. Used to make a point of cleaning it out spraying with WD at regular intervals before it got too bad. Can't help with plastic cover, mine went astray as well hence regular clean & lube.

Hi

Wondering if anyone here can help. I have the same removable factory fit tow bar but it is stuck on the car when I got it. I have tried in vain using loads of WD and ever increasing hammers to try and remove it but with no luck.

I assume I need to insert the key and rotate it but an not sure after that.

A post above mentions twisting a lever, does this mean the leave should move back before the tow bar is removed. I am hesitant of pushing things in the wrong direction.

I have searched the web but cannot find any official removal instruction; it has taken a while to find the same type of towbar.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi,

My recently acquired 03 VRS has a factory fitted detachable towbar but I can't figure out how to attach it and have no instructions.. I have just got the electric hookup swung down so far. Any help appreciated..

Some photos of the towbar are at https://plus.google.com/photos/105280137145949174554/albums/5890112977596117713?authkey=CL6enZD-woCaZg
