Serious help needed turbo gone?

Featured Replies

I think my turbo may have blown!

There is no smoke or anything unusual coming out the exhaust though.

I was driving home not far and accelerate quick enough on a straight and it started whining loudly and there was no power. The whine is there while idling now and it gets louder on acceleration but no power!

Is my turbo gone?

If it's definitely a whine and not a whistle with no smoke then it doesn't sound good...

my turbo has just went and was exactly the same noise took the turbo off and one of the impeller blades in the turbo had snapped off its very pricey aswell

Sounds the same as when mine went at Bedford.

The impeller comes apart but doesn't seize the shaft meaning the propellor on the exhaust side can still turn meaning the car starts but whines horribly due to the impeller blades being jammed in the housing!

a really worrying how many turbos go!

Pastyboy spot on took it out and found most of them broke! A little scared something may have gone into the engine, hopefully the intercooler caught it. I have since stripped all piping out and cleaned it including the intercooler and am now waiting on my PD150 to arrive. What a great reason to upgrade!!!

One quick question to anyone in the know. If it was a bad remap that caused this. Will it be ok to run the bigger turbo on the same map? As it will be capable of handling more power. And I can't afford to get it adjusted and was wanting to wait till I got the rest of the upgrades.

That's not actually that bad.

Looks like the shaft has had play in it meaning its moved and shaved the edges of the blades off on the housing.

Both mine have just desintigrated!!

While a remap won't help the turbo all it does it put it under more strain.

Assuming it had been on the car for a while it just accelerated the wear.

If you put the map on and the turbo exploded within a few miles then the mapper had turned the "more" dial a bit far.

The PD150 will be stronger and be able to take more boost anyways so potentially even if the map was a bit harsh for the poor weak feeble little KKK the new unit should be able to take more punishment anyways.

To be fair think it is and it isn't, yes the KKK unit has its issues but I don't think they are disproportionate to the number of cars.

The Internet is great but people normally only put bad press on here.

Yes you can find hundreds of "oh no my turbo has gone pop" threads on here but if all things were equal there should be thousands of users who should be posting "another day without turbo issues" threads

Also consider that the earliest Fabias are now over 10 years old and will have matching high mileage and that even younger cars that go pop have generally had remaps so have had the wear accelerated.

Make sure you change the oil feed pipe, plus obviously new oil and filter.

Thanks techie!

Is the oil the one that goes around the side of the engine to the both of the oil filter?

The oil feed pipe yeah. Goes from the oil filter housing to the turbo.

Sorry to go off on a tangent slightly, is the oil feed pipe stainless steel? Or has mine been replaced recently as it looks very clean and shiney.

It is normally quite bright and shiny.

Pd150 turbos are quite strong

I mapped the shiz out of mine at 102k miles!

Had been suffering sticking vanes, so took it off for a clean before mapping!

Now on 108k miles and rr'd at 198bhp on a realistic rolling road ( i know this as i had my mapped fabia there and it made a realistic 173bhp)
