MDI (Swing Radio) Is it just rubbish?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Fed up with flipping MDI, why does it need to be so hard?! :@

So orgionally we had mp3 albums on a usb stick all in folders this = quick start up though the rubbish mix mode only does that folder not all of your music (which is what we want).

I then reneamed all the files to artist-album-track no-title and put them all in the root folder. this meant that you could browse files (though not that well) and mix/random would play them all in random. Unfortunately when in this mode it takes aaggggeeesss to start up (MDI Initialising).

Is there anything I can do to improve this please or is it just a load of rubbish ? My Alpine radio in the other car skips between folders and everything works perfectly and instantly.....

Cheers

One page leads to the other, but there's helpful notes on both.

This is the first page:

http://www.my-gti.co...rmware-upgrades

You can then click through to the firmware itself.

Just tried both the one from that site and the software from the VW site that someone had linked in their comments. Both resulted in SW Update Failed :(

Try an older one first. I'm not 100% sure that the updates are cumulative.

Tried them all from the date of the car onwards all failed :'( guess there are no more updates. Having to put the music into folders now not at all ideal as it can not 'mix all' then, but otherwise takes about 30 misn to finish initialising. Pretty awful really :(

A 24hr test drive convinced me that Swing was pretty poor.Β  To polish the turd by spending Β£150 on MDI seemed a waste so I bit the bullet and went for Amundsen+.Β  It is pretty darned good!!

Β

That doesn't help you though!Β  Don't know if it will work with the Swing but the trick with the Bolero is to ensure that "mix folders" option is selected in the menus then put a single track in the root directory or in a directory that contains other directories.Β  Start playing this track and then select mix and it will select randomly from all the folders in the same directory as this track.

Β

Does that make sense?

eg

in directoryΒ  - ..\..\BandName\

have a single track - ..\..\BandName\tracka.mp3

and albums in subdirectories

..\..\BandName\album1

..\..\BandName\album2

..\..\BandName\album3

Err don't follow compleatly, currently as I could only get it to do random on the current folder I tried splitting it up so it was

I just had 5 directories or for which were /a-f/ and Β /g-l/Β  for example and they housed all of the MP3s so do I just need to put a single file in the root and it will then pick up hte rest when on random ?

Yes that's it - assuming the Swing works like a Bolero.

Β

Lets say on your memory stick you have 5 albums - 2 by bandA and 3 by bandB

You have 2 directories in the root \bandA and \bandB

bandA has 2 subdirectories \bandA\album1 and \bandA\album2

bandB has 3 subdirectories \bandB\album1 and \bandB\album2 and \bandB\album3

Β

If you want to randomly select tracks from both bandA and bandB put a track in the root directory of the memory stick - start playing that and then select mix.

Β

If you just want random tracks from bandB then put a track in \bandB - start playing that and then select mix.

Β

As I said - that is how it worked on my MDI & Bolero in the last car.Β  The Swing may be different.
