Whine & grind

Featured Replies

I've got a 12 plate 2.0 diesel that's done just over 11k miles and while it's been a great car to drive, in the past couple of days I've noticed a slight whine/rattle at around 1,200-1,500 revs particularly in second gear. Is this just one of those things that engines sometimes pick up with time, has it been there all the time and I've only just noticed it, or is it the precursor to something more serious?

Does it sound a bit like a blowing exhaust, coming from the engine bay?

A bit, but it's not exhaust and once it gets past 1,500 revs it's fine.

It could be a loose air intake pipe, rattling away harmonically when the engine revs get in that sort of rev range. Search "gruff exhaust" on the forum to find the fix that worked for me (and which the dealer sorted for me properly under warranty).

Thanks. Excuse my ignorance even further but it's on lease so how would that work if I had to take it into a different dealer from the one it came from?

You should just get your local skoda garage to take a look at it, doesn't have to be the supplying dealer.

You should pop the bonnet open and get someone to rev the engine slowly from tick-over up to 2,000rpm and back, whilst you hold on to the air intake housing - to make sure it is just that problem and nothing more serious.

Could be many things tbh, do what Jake said if it doesn't stop doing it, whine and rattle combos can be expensive.

Again, thank you. Being a mechanical half-wit with ambitions to become a fully-fledged moron I'll be taking it into a garage later this week.

Update - took it in, 'technician' drove with me for ten minutes and couldn't find any problem. He suggested it might have been a bit of DPF problem and to have a motorway blast, which makes sense as I've been using exclusively round town for a month or so. Thanks once again for your advice.

Sorry for taking my time replying, but this was it. Fixed under warranty.
