Fabia Comfort 1.9 TDI

Featured Replies

Recent bought a Fabia as a little run around and fancied a change of scene. Ive never had much experience with tuning the PD engines so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. In regards to making the engine breath a little better along with freeing up some power. Can anyone recommend any supporting mods for when I have the car remapped? Would things like a decat/EGR delete make any difference?

Thanks

FMIC, egr delete, decat then map? How much power are you looking on getting out of the car?

EGR delete is just a long term, life preserving mod.  Stops the car recycling burnt exhaust gas - means less claggy intake.  If you do it, it would be worth removing your whole inlet manifold for a good clean before fitting.

Decat will help, and will not affect emissions come MOT time.

A panel filter from the likes of Green will give a little bit come remap time.  Worth trying to find a PD160 intake pipe too before a remap, but they come at a premium sadly, even second hand!

Also, you can remove the backbox and replace with a straight pipe which will aid exhaust flow a little bit, along with the decat.

These are a remap and you will be around 145, up to 150bhp.

if you are serious about tuning for better power, look into finding a PD150 turbo, and PD150/PD130 injector units, fitted, then mapped = 175 to 180bhp.  Complement with a front mounted intercooler kit will make this kind of power more reliable as you get cooler, denser turbocharged air = more bang!

PS: My car is a comfort TDI as well. ;)

I think a FMIC will be unnecessary for the time being. Will look into a decat/ EGR delete though

Thanks!

Generic remap for £200-£300 is likely best bang for buck if done by a reputable tuner.

Other than that slight lowering plus a RARB will increase smile factor but probably highlight the lack of sporty brakes. (RARB alone is worthwhile IMO).

Another simple to do (usually) is cruise control... Not sure if a comfort spec would have the right convenience control module to run it though.

My 2001 setup didn't allow cruise, but when I upgraded to vRS spec stuff, my cruise install suddenly started working :D

An EGR delete is definitely on the cards, never been overly fond of them lol. As for the IM that should be a doddle.

Would a PD160 exhaust give any improvement?

Not looking to chase silly power. Just a little more than stock:-)

Thanks

no, exhaust will give nothing extra really.  The benefit comes removing the physical cat & backbox and replacing with straight pipes the same diameter as the main exhaust sections. :)

I would say to be honest then, decat, backbox, EGR, panel filter & remap and be happy @ around 145bhp.

Ensure the mapper knows how to delete the EGR from the system when mapping though, so the engine light doesn't come on.

Will be looking into a remap around September time.

Car has just been lowered with H&R springs, new gas shocks, powerflex console bushes.

Not had no issues with the brakes yet, will be looking into bigger brakes around remap time. And funnily enough I've got a cruise control kit sitting here at the moment lol. Just need to check that it will work now haha

So it would be worthwhile just having a system made from the downpipe?

Would like to keep the car reliable, just have a little more poke for when the need arises lol.

Will doing an EGR delete throw the light up instantly? Can this be cured with VCDS?

Thanks

worthwhile, but not necessary I think.  Decat and backbox replacement pipes should only be about £150-£200.  Looking at double that for a full system.

EGR delete will throw the light up eventually.  Usually when car's full power not being used as it recycles more exhaust gas when poddling along gently, to increase emissions savings.  VCDS can clear the fault once, but it will just pop back.  A mapper "should" know how to remove the EGR from the car's system, so it will never appear again.  Mine's been gone for ages :)

Well the car has only done 42k so better to do it now rather than later lol.

So you have any recommendations for the decat/back box?

As for the EGR. I can clear the codes. Didn't know if VCDS could be used to switch it off completely. Car doesn't get driven very hard at all tbh so the light could be on quite often lol.

decat + backbox = remove and replace with straight pipes.  Any reasonable exhaust place should be able to knock up two bits of pipe.

Sure you don't want to take yours as far as I did?  ;)

My local exhaust place won't charge a silly amount for a stainless system from downpipe back.

And nah, wanting a MK1 Octavia VRS as a toy. Fabia was just bought as a daily/commuter. Will still be looked after though :-) if a FVRS with a knackered engine came up I might be interested though lol

You can change the convenience control unit if you like, its got nowt to do with the cruise control though. However you may have the wrong central electrics ecu. ;)

I understand its the 6Q0 or 6Q1 I need. Is there any way of checking visually? The kit I bought from skoda. It should all just be plug and play, no splicing involved?

Thanks

If you have small hands and like working blind then yes.

What does it actually entail? I'm quite good with fiddly jobs. Would rather not do any chopping lol
