A few pics of my 1989 Rapid

Featured Replies

Hi folks, just a few pictures of my car-it is a low mileage 89 model with two elderly owners before me who cherished and garaged it-it had the original Skoda mats and the seats are in amazing nick with no cags or sunburn.  I really like the Rapids and this one is a nice car with the only mods being some subtle spotlights and a CD player.

It is undergoing a mech/tech refurb at present to cure on overheat issue, but drives really well.

I've never seen another 2315 Pennine Grey (! grey !) Rapid and looked up to find there are only 17 136 Rapids in use in the UK.

Anyone got another in this colour?

Hi. I don't have a pennine grey one and have only seen one in the past, but I do have a white and a silver one. I'm in West Wales so not a million miles from you. Would be nice to come over and have a peek.

Very nice. I've always wanted one.

Not me!

Would be nice to see another...thanks for reply!

Fancy a meet? Are you going to the Briskoda Megameet?

Missed the details on megameet: where and when?

Looks lovely....I guess when they said penine grey they meant beige! I had a mushroom one back in the day, it was also a version of beige. Finding one with decent back seat covers is a real bonus because they do tend to rot even on low mileage models. Hopefully the overheat isn't a big problem.

You're not far from me if you want to convoy down.

I'll hopefully be collecting a mate at Warndon Villages, Worc, en-route-will update when it falls into place

Yes, it's really straight inside and out-the seats are surprising; I remember ten year's ago my old girlfriend's Rapid had scruffy seats already.

It's never grey-it's beige; hearing aid beige I am told  :giggle:

It's going to be a HG and skim, flush, check waterpump, new reservoir and cap etc-it's going into the old school Skoda garage in Ludlow.

I'm in a mess today though as our family vehicle (Tourneo 8 seat) caught fire with us all in it as we pulled off the drive; after the third extinguisher, I managed to put it out before brigade arrived (18 mins), but I need to prioritise this vehicle on repairs-it was an electrical fire under the bonnet.  Ho-hum.

Like your car, do bring it along to Gaydon, we want a good show of rear engined Skoda!

Thanks!

After my Ford engine fire, not sure how I'm going to run to repairing my Iveco (EDC light on), Ford (engine wiring loom fire) and Skoda (HG, skim, flush, service) all at the same time.

Depending on how much the fire damage is, the (unroadworthy) Skoda repair might have to be sacrificed   or repaired and sold  :heartbreak:

The Skoda is currently running no? So just do a service at home and keep using it for the time being?

No, it's poorly.  It needs the head off, prob skimmed, new head gasket and the other components checked-it overheats in 5 miles and blows steam out of the exhaust.

It was booked to be towed in for the works tomorrow, but need to investigate the engine fire damage on the Tourneo first...

So, unless an angel of Skoda descends and magically makes it better, it's sat on the drive for now  :swear:  :swear:

:( That's a shame. Willing to pop over and lend a hand if you decide to have a go at home.

That's really nice of you, but I've not tackled a HG on one of these and I've no idea how to assess head for damage. The Rapid is more or less spot on apart from the overheating, so need to get this bit spot on to make the car right.

My logic was that if it went in to the Skoda garage, it would come back right and would run correctly, rather than have me go at it piecemeal and do the HG in again if I missed something like a leak or pump issue.

Really gutted the Tourneo went up in smoke-need it back urgently.  I'm going at that tomorrow and I'll see how we go

  Head gaskets on these are about as easy as it gets as long as things undo, bolts don't snap ect. Do you have the parts? The water pumps are unavailable but are rebuildable with a new seal. Happy to advise further if needed. If you get completely stuck and you want to get it me that's fine though my workshop is in Hertfordshire. I have everything needed in stock and I use a very good supplier of Skoda parts who is currently in CZ restocking.

Incedentaly, car looks brilliant, you have to love some of the Skoda colours of that era!!

Many thanks for the repsonse!

I have been quoted £150-200 for the job at the Skoda garage, plus head skim if needed, seems cheap enough?

Is this not the pump:

Apart from HG, skim, waterpump, flush, maybe tank and cap, could you think of anything else that it would need?

  For a garage that's a reasonable price. That water pump is no good for the alloy headed 135/6 engine, it hasn't got the extra water pipe fitting. You're better off replacing the seal on the original pump which otherwise don't go wrong usually as long as they are greased [have you noticed the screw on grease cap on top of the pump?]

Yes, looks different to the ebay one as has a knurled cap on it,  Mine looks very new and has instant gaskets all around it, so may not be an issue....

I was planning to tow it with the Tourneo tomorrow, but that is out of action.

I'll work it out somehow.  Would be nice to get fixed and over to the mega-meet  :)

   I'm sure the Skoda garage know this, but while the head is off, the coolant area around the liners need the silt [like sand] cleaning out, there's usually an especially large amount around number 4 liner which compacts and causes reduced cooling to that area. It's a messy job poking and blasting that out, and easier with the liners removed. While doing that remove the drain plug at the back of the block, the drain hole will almost certainly be blocked with silt. Also the liner protrusion [above the block] needs checking if you're not removing them anyway, and if removed the protrusion needs setting [different sized shims are available].

The original Skoda hose clips aren't too great, in particular check the ones under the car on the hoses that join the front to rear metal pipes. [under a long metal cover held on with 4 12mm headed bolts]. Obviously check the hoses for cracks and leaks...especially the 6mm internal diameter pipe from the heater to radiator...which is under the front bonnet and is where you will find the bleed tap for the cooling system. It's essential to use that tap for bleeding. Makes sense to replace the thermostat too, needs to be 80 or 82 degrees, not 88 degrees as fitted to 135/6 Favorits.

And don't forget to join the Skoda Owners' Club!! Sorry, I had to get that in somewhere otherwise I wouldn't be me! :sun:

This is why I did not want to attempt it myself-each car has characteristics and needs expert attention.

I wish I was nearer to you and could get it done as said, would like it to be fully checked over and sorted to make it run 100% for years....
