Insurance for new driver (girl)

Featured Replies

My 18yr old girlfriend has just passed her driving test, and I've been having a quick look on the comparison sites, and the cheapest quote so far was for a Peugeot 107, at just over £2000.

Is there any insurers on here who could offer anything more competitive? Obviously I know it depends on details etc.

£2000 is good for an 18 year old new driver

You could try Insure The Box but its not really worth getting a tracker fitted if its £200 cheaper

Admiral are pretty good for young drivers.

pass plus? most can save hundreds of pounds...

Put parents on as named drivers and if your older try it with you on also, but as named driver

Rob, tried this with our eldest and it's made little to no difference. Pass plus did make a lot of difference to her boyfriend though so may be worth the extra

I have always had insurance in my own name but have heard people say this a lot and for many seems to help lower their premiums. Would the person you decide to name on your policy not then have to declare that they are named on yours to their own insurer, possibly increasing their premium though? Just thinking along the lines of the questions I get asked on quote generators, 'do you have use of any other vehicles' and the like? I know of people who add their mother for example but do it automatically and the named driver never touches the car or knows of this fact, they would certainly not be in a position to declare it onwards!

Yep, she did pass plus, and i put one of her parents on the policy as they may actually drive it from time to time.

Thanks for the replies, I thought as she was a girl might be able to get it for less than £2000.

When I did pass plus and rang up my insurers to tell them, they took £66 off my premium that year, and it cost me £75 to do it in the first place. But then since then it's lowered my premium a little each year, so I'm sure it pays for itself quite quickly

I saved £800 when

I was 18 by putting both parents and my older sister on

I did think about that, but then sort of what Fubar touched on, it does seem like it's cheating a bit saying they'll also drive the car from time to time when they most likely won't touch it?

Fully Comp can sometimes work out cheaper than TPF&T so don't necessarily assume you'll get the best price for going for the reduced cover. Try both when you're getting quotes.

Sorry we can't help until she's 19 on TPF&T or 22 on Comp.

That quote was fully comp! Never bothered with the others. Looks like she better get saving then!

It is time the government did something about this.  I think it is outrageous for something which is legally required to drive to be left up to private companies to decide the price of.  With premiums in the thousands no wonder there are so many uninsured drivers running about.

Re the Parents or a Named Driver.

(Not fronting.)

One parent or adult, family member etc with a low risk & an experienced driver with their own policy might be found to be cheaper than 2 Named Drivers or even 3.

(not always, but with some Underwriters.)

If the car is not for Commuting or Travelling to College, Uni etc, then that might lower the cost.

But no point going for that then on the 'Declaration', and going on to be using regularly for Commuting and then getting caught out, and they do check useage if they suspect a fraudulent claim.

(You answered where parked during the day/night, Post Code etc.)

I think it was unfair on most women that they're insurance was put up because it was supposedly discriminating against men. All the facts and figures do show young men have the most accidents. So while insurance prices are still ridiculous, I personally think it was better how it was.

Hi,

Feel free to give us a try if you like.

Regards,

Dan.

Thanks, wasn't really competitive, thanks anyway.

What I find interesting, is that out of interest I changed her postcode to mine in the quite details, and it bought it down from £2065 to about £980! More than halved! She lives in Essex, and it's not that bad where she lives at all?

Yes, I never understood why EU rules made it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sex, but still perfectly fine on the basis of age.

Because both will get you in trouble in a number of other situations, ie, employment law.

Ok no problem.

thanks for giving us a try.

I was told affluent areas premiums can be higher due to them just claiming as excess is not an issue

It's not cheating at all. You need to try it. Good luck.

Whats it matter if they don't drive it, they are occasional drivers if they are named and then if an occasion arises that they need to drive it your covered.

The quote I got was with both her parents on the policy. Looks like she'll have to come and live with me then!

Will try and see how much a multicar policy is, and then will probably just have to get her insured on her mums.

Thanks for all the input.
