Xenon Headlight Adjustment

Featured Replies

The garage has just told me that the headlight adjusters on both xenons on my Edition 100 are broken and it failed the MOT as a result. I'd rather not fork our for new headlights if I can help it but I can't find any repair kits anywhere. Anybody know how to overcome this little problem?

Thanks

Standard Hella fault.

The lamp adjusters are a terrible design - the steel shafts rust and the nylon bevel gears for the adjusters come loose and fall off.

The fix is to remove all the adjuster gears and drill a 1.5 mm cross hole in the steel shaft near the free end. Fit a compression spring around the shaft to keep the ball pin in the correct location, then lock the spring into position with a steel cross pin. I fitted a tapered pin as used by clockmakers, but any pin which is a close fit will do. Leave the ends of the pin projecting about 8 mm from the shaft on each side.

To adjust the lamps, reach down and turn the shaft with your fingers using the cross pin. The spring keeps the adjustment shaft in its correct position - otherwise it can move axially and upset the alignment.

Valeo lamps (as fitted to the Superb Mk 2) are better made and much better designed.

Thanks for that rtd. Out of interest, are the adjusters for halogen lights the same as those for Xenon HID?

As far as I know, all of the adjusters for this pattern of lamp unit are the same - and fail in the same way.
