Had a number of issues with the rear callipers getting jammed on the sliders, so I'm replacing the sliders on both sides with a repair set, as individual parts are not available separately.

 

VAG P/N for the kit is 5K0698470; you will need two kits to do both rear callipers.

 

 

Compared the old parts to the new; note the swelling and distortion of the bottom slider rubber sleeve (old slider very difficult to extract due to the state of the rubber sleeve).

 

 

Also noted the same issue with the gaiters.

 

 

First Jack car and remove calliper; refer to the changing rear disc thread for instructions;

Remove old sliders and gaiters.

 

Clean out old grease from the carrier slider cylinders; found cotton buds soaked in brake cleaner work a treat.

 

 

Before fitting the new gaiters to the carrier, place a blob of the supplied white grease in the 'internal' end of the gaiter to ensure some gets pushed into the cylinder when fitting the pins.

 

 

Thoroughly coat the slider pins with the white grease; don't forget to fit the rubber sleeve to the bottom pin first. Refit the pins into their respective carrier cylinders. Finally 'clip over' the gaiter onto the slider pin.

 

 

 

Refit calliper; don't forget to grease the piston plate and outer pad retaining fingers with Mintex Cera TEC or similar. spanners required being 13 & 19mm. Torque 35Nm.

 

 

Check the free movement of the calliper and pads by pushing and pulling on the calliper body.

 

 

Reset the calliper piston by pressing the brake pedal repeatedly until it resists movement.

 

Safety note: it is important to undertake this step before driving the car, as you may crash otherwise.

 

Once reset check for free movement of the disc through the pads.

 

 

Refit wheel, lower to ground and torque wheel bolts to 120 Nm.

 

Road test.
