Turbo Diagnostics

Featured Replies

Good Afternoon,

I bought a MK1 Fabia VRS with 84,000 on the clock.

FSH and 2 previous owners.

Rick at Unicorn Motor Developments in Stockport (very good reputation) spent a few hours with the car and remapped to 160-165bhp.

I made it clear that although I wanted a bit more poke, I wanted to do so within the safe limits of the car and not run through turbo/clutches at a rate of knots.

I am very happy and love the car. And have had friends who have had these cars before and claim they are bomb proof if looked after.

However, over the last few weeks I have read a number of posts on here about blown turbos, and I have to admit my enjoyment for driving the car has diminished slightly as I am literally waiting for it to go pop.

I very very rarely go near 4k revs, probably 90% between 2k-3k revs. And I never try to overtake etc.. until the engine is at temperature.

To stop my worrying, is there anywhere I can test the health of my turbo i.e. a place near my area Manchester, Huddersfield, Preston, Sheffield etc.. that can run a diagnostic on my turbo to make sure I have at least a number of years left in my turbo, so I can get back to enjoying it again.

Thanks in advance.

The best way is to see if the turbo has any play in the shaft, you may be able to do it with it still on the car yourself but I'm not sure. Just wobble the shaft and see If there is any play in it, a turbo can go at any point given thow, even a new one.

Awesome GTI mate. They put a camera into the turbo to see if anything is breaking up etc.

They charged me £60 last year for the diagnostic test. Well worth it :-)

checked and it has play = new turbo ?

Thrashed and blown up but enjoyed = new turbo ?
