Remap needed if exhaust modded?

Featured Replies

I've just read in Honest John that you may need your ECU remapped if you get a sports exhaust fitted. Is this true? What with all this 'learning' business, I'd've thought the ECU could figure out there was less back-pressure by itself?

If true, and I were to get a remap, would I need to got back if I changed the exhaust then?

(I'm generally a mod-abstainer, but you never know...)

Nah you dont need to have the ecu remapped. Although on some engines if planning both mods you can tweek the map to suit the exhaust.

And therefore eliminate the chance of a lot of soot coming out and releasing more unburned fuel...

Get it remapped if you get that exhaust, it won't change it's settings automatically to suit the mod. It's a computer, not a brain!

The ECU is a brain.

It will alter fueling etc. If more air is expelled more can be drawn in, the MAF will pick this up and adjust accordingly.

No it won't. This is what I have been told by the service manager here, you play around with the car, you gotta do a remap to match it, because it will go 'crazy'.

The ECU is adaptive and should compensate for things like exhaust and filters.

However if you plan to do other mods you might as well do them all before a remap....that way you're sure to get the best benefit from the remap.

Would also say not to automatically doubt Lummox...he knows his stuff...trust me. ;):D

An engine ECU has to be adaptive, or it would never run in extremes of weather. How would a car with a fixed unadaptive system run at -10 and sill run at +40 or at sea level and up a mountain.
