Ahhhhhh

Where to start, after a swift drive home last weekend upon leaving the motorway I noticed a knock as I decelerated upon pulling away from the traffic lights I had judder and clutch slip with the biting point having changed dramatically in the space of a minute not good, within a mile I could smell oil, **** really not good pulled up and got the AA out (never thought I would need them on a VAG car, diagnosis not good) had my VRS dropped at my local Dealership for inspection ASAP there and then. Blade Skoda fitted me in within 72 hrs not to bad and the diagnosis was bad major failure inside the gearbox creating a hole in the casing and Oil everywhere meaning new clutch and fly wheel kit. Quote £2400!

after some spluttering I happened on GRB a specialist who re-build your box and guarantee it for 12mnths or 10k intial est £5-700 plus £300 for clutch and fly wheel my dealer then wanted a total of £350 for all labour to refit and inc original work, ok so down to £1300 ish not so bad

Gear box arrives at GRB, que phone call, the cause is a pin which holds the shaft in place has failed allowing the drive shaft to drop into the box and cause havoc result completely new internals required and a small re-weld on the hole in the case, I asked have you guys seen this before

Sir your VAG box is one of seven on our work bench today and one of ten this week, all the same issue all from cars with close to 80k on the clock!....Hey how common is this this our weekly average!...

so that's roughly 500 VAG Boxes per year through GRB all same issue!

The cure is simple do away with the end of the shaft by fitting a LSD, que my call to TSR, 10 mins later and £700 later a full Quaife LSD with SRP bolt kitt is on its way over to GRB so over to the forum.

I know I will get a performance increase from the LSD but wish I had known of this issue before, I think VAG group need to be made aware of this how many more of you have had this issue, if there is enough maybe we can put in to Skoda UK and build a case for recall and retro fit of LSD's?

Bergy.

Oh well, hope it works out in the end.

Sorry, but I also had to edit the title.  No expletives allowed even if made loooooooong with lots of vowels. ;)

Would have been cheaper to fit second hand box

And stop and just bolt the diff job done save a fortune

But at least you have an LSD !!

But sounds like a mega mega bill

, I asked have you guys seen this before

TBH buddy you need to put it in perspective, How many of these box's are built and fitted across they VAG group.

Then work out how old the vehicles are that are 12 years old in my case, and then you will release that you will have no chance  a VAG dealer will propose a recall, and certainly not a LSD. They would need to be on "LSD" to do that .... Same issue with Sony play station you always hear of the yellow light of death and sounds like a huge amount get it but you don't here of all the units that never get it thus in ratio from good to bad is miles apart.

I am not convinced that GRB get the exact same issue on every box and all the same mileage.

I know very few  folks with gearbox issues on Briskoda so just use that as a comparison. Clutch issues yes which is expected on high mileage cars. Mine has done 150,000 miles on std box and i give it some when allowed.

A real simple(£700) fix !!!!

No recall gonna happen, for the record, mine popped on around 120 iirc

How much is a second hand gearbox in UK?

I can find it with 200-250 pounds
