Yeti Winter wheels

Featured Replies

Time to put 'em on already?

I have decided to keep my tyres but sell the wheels instead.

The tyres are a close enough fit for the Freelander.

The spare wheel kit has a 6J rim and 195 tyre.  Is it possible to carry a  16 inch 7J steel wheel with 215 tyre as a spare instead (winter tyre in summer and vice versa?)  That's what I do on our Mk 1 Fabia, but it had a full size spare to start with.  You can buy a Yeti jack for £33.26, and the spare wheel kit on the FL Yeti is now £150!!  (I'm ordering an S, with 16 inch wheels).  Or are 6Js with 195 tyres acceptable all round for winter?

I think those are too narrow.

If you look in the Wheel & Tyre thread in the Technical Guides there are the sizes recommended by Skoda.

Thanks, Llanigraham.  Looking at this and the tech guide, the recommended winter tyre is 205/55R 16, but this is only 632mm diameter compared with the standard 215/60R16 (664mm) or 225/50R 17 (657mm) - doubtless to allow room for chains.  Also they come in 91 weight rating, which seems to be acceptable only for 1.2TSI.  A 205/60R 16 would be 652mm diameter, so seems a better bet for winter if you don't need chains, and come in 96 weight rating.  Tyre manufacturers' tables show that 205 can go on 5.5 to 7.5 rims, so 6J would be OK.  So - buy the spare wheel kit and 3 more steel rims, a set of winter tyres and put the unused 195/60 16 tyre (640mm diameter) on eBay.  But the  would a 215 summer tyre fit under the floor as a spare in winter?

The 215 tyre sort of fits under the false floor but lifts it up an inch or so. There's a fold line at the front of the false floor to allow this but besides lifting the floor up it leaves a gap at the back to the door sill.

Hope you follow my drift,

TP

Thanks, TP - that settles it.  I'd conclude from this that the 205 ("summer" spare) will fit slightly better.  And an aftermarket boot mat will cover the gap.

Now I can order...

Is it possible to carry a 16 inch 7J steel wheel with 215/60 tyre as a spare instead

Yes. I did. It even fits under the boot floor where the spare is.....

BUT.....

It raises the floor by about 20mm or so and leaves the false floor suspended. You might want to put some supports underneath the floor to support it.
