Knocking getting worse from front passenger side

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My fabia had the large bush on the lower arm replaced 3 months ago as my garage said it was in need of replacement. After a couple of weeks there was a very minor noise so took the car back in, they said they could not find any problems. Over the last month the knocking noise has got a lot worse and can be clearly heard whilst driving, its not an issue when the car is in a straight line its bad when pulling away braking and turning to the left. With the car stationary turning the wheel to full lock you can hear a clunk noise like metal on metal, I have had the anti roll bars replaced is there any other things that can make the knocking noise.

The car is standard no suspension mods and the noise gets worse once its rained and the car has got wet. The noise is now so bad it sounds like its coming up through the floor and the dash any advice would be good. Im taking the car back the garage tomorrow morning with the receipt for the large bush that was done as very worried its serious now.

I wonder if they fitted the console bush correctly. I think the standard bushes have to be fitted a certain way round because the bush isn't solid, it has voids in it. It would allow the end of the wishbone to knock against the console if fitted incorrectly.

Other causes could be anti-roll bar drop link, track rod end, bottom ball joint, anti-roll bar bushes, etc. I'd get it jacked up and check for any play at the wheels.

Hi all

Ok update on the knocking noise the garage replaced the driver side track rod end joint as it was worn out, I then took the car out for a run and the knocking noise was still there from the front passenger side. When they put it back over the pit I had 5 of the mechanics under the car checking everything, they found two bolts halfway down the underside of the car one on each side that although not clearly loose in any way were. After they tightened them both up I then took the car for another run and the knocking had stopped completely so if you have knocking and cant seem to find the cause check these bolts are not even slightly undone, the noise was traveling through the floor to the front of the car and it sounded awful. I am very happy it was not a huge bill £53 to get it all sorted.

Loose bolts? Wow, didn't see that one coming. Glad it's all sorted though :)

Out of interest, which bolts are you referring to that were loose? I dunno if you can explain without pics or not!?!!

Hi,

All I can say is what the mechanics told me they are halfway down the length of the car one on each side, and once loose even slightly they allow movement in whatever they hold in that area. So on pull away turning and braking there is movement and a loud knocking noise that travels through the car.

Hi all

after talking to the mechanic who actually tighten up the bolts they hold the whole front suspension to the car and even a quarter of a turn loose can cause the awful knocking noise. He thinks that after the console bush had been done the bolt worked loose slightly.

Is that fixed now then??

Hi

Yes now fixed and no more awful loud knocking so very happy and its just passed its MOT :whew:  :whew:  :whew:

Good stuff, i'm getting mine looked at next week, I'll get them to check the bolts on mine as well

I haven't read any if the above. But my fabia was doing same but on drivers side. It was the front anti role bar bushes that where allowing it to move left and right! Cost me £87 supplied and fitted and it's fully gone know ;)

I know this topic hasn't been visited for a while but found it when looking for the same problem.

I have a knocking noise on pulling away in 1st or 2nd and when reversing/turning out of parking spaces for example. It sounds like it comes from the front passenger side, under the gearbox linkage, offside rear, all over the place. I replaced the ARB Drop Links for a set of Meyle's as one was shot but the problem was still there. It has been driving me nuts so I spoke the missus uncle who is a well respected retired VW mechanic and straight away he said I need to tighten the chassis bolts, no question. This advice pretty much matches what 'hobbo' has highlighted here. I will be taking a look at the weekend and will update this thread with my findings.

Do you know where they are located dazza1 Ive had quite a lot of work done on my fabia.. Had no knocking since the work.. Then had the tracking down and now I've noticed the clunk as has been described above.
