Wiring in electrics

Featured Replies

I love my new Mk1, I want to add my phone charger in and my camera detector without having cables dangling around all over the shop.

First I think I'd like to put a phone charger cable in the cubby box under the radio. Is there an easily accessible power-source I can tap for this?

Cheers

In the MKII's we've generally gone for a a switched live straight out of the fuse-box. There's no reason you couldn't do the same in a MKI ;)

As above you can easily run power from either the fuse box or the distribution box under the steering wheel.

Why not looped off the switched live on the back of the radio?

OK so getting a 12v feed doesn't seem to be too hard. Now to turn that into a 5v for charging USB. What's the best way of doing this? I presume at worst I could solder to a cigg-lighter charger?

I ran a 12v line into a 4-port power socket thingy in the glove box. Into that is plugged the usual plugs for charger and dashcam. A hole in the back of the glovebox lets the cables out.

FUBAR did one into the knee-box on his MKII too.

I would humbly suggest that this is the easiest way to go, easy install and easy to plug more in if needed.

Makes sense. I just had a look and there doesn't appear to be a nice way into the glove box without drilling holes, is that correct?

It's ok, I think I can manage drilling some neat holes but I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed a grommit or something.

Correct, you'll be making your own holes. I put mine in the top back right corner. The 4-port then obscured the hole ;)

I used a 12v to 5v in line converter off ebay with a female usb port on the end of it. Works great and very discrete once wired into fusebox and behind glovebox. Look at item 321123348763 for example.

I hard wired one of these in to the distribution box under the steering wheel and located it in the cubby hole by your knees, I use it to power my dash cam and the USB to plug in my phone.
